Kelly creates a career in nail art

When Kelly Cherry enrolled in the Certificate III in Nail Technology (SHB30321) at TAFE Queensland, she was searching for something that truly sparked her creativity. What she discovered was not just a course, but a pathway into a flexible and rewarding career.

“I tried a whole heap of different things, and it wasn’t really giving me a spark… I then decided to look it up [nail technology] online, and I’ve been loving it ever since,” Kelly explained.

Kelly’s interest in nail art began early, but it wasn’t until she explored it as a career that everything clicked. The Certificate III in Nail Technology (SHB30321) gave her the opportunity to transform her passion into practical, job-ready skills, opening doors to working in a salon or running a business of her own.

Kelly was able to pursue her course through the Career Start subsidy, which helped reduce her upfront costs and allowed her to focus on building her career.

Throughout her studies, Kelly has developed a wide range of technical and creative skills, from nail shaping and chrome finishes to intricate, artistic designs.

“I especially love learning techniques like chrome… now that I know what products I should be using, it comes out so much better,” she said.

Upon successful completion of the Certificate III in Nail Technology (SHB30321), students develop the technical skills to gain employment in nail and beauty salons, while also achieving the qualification needed to work as a self-employed nail technician.

For Kelly, the long-term goal is clear.

“The plan is to get some actual experience in salons first and then move on to having my own business,” Kelly said.

Since Kelly completed the Certificate III course in June 2026, she has decided to take the next step in her studies by undertaking the Diploma of Beauty (SHB50121) to further build on her skills for a career in the industry.

One of Kelly’s standout projects during her Certificate III in Nail Technology (SHB30321), was an elaborate themed nail set showcasing her creativity, planning, and technical skills.

“I decided to make a Paris-themed nail… it took me a fair bit of time to figure out what I wanted to do. It took at least two months to come up with the idea and the planning and then actually execute it,” she said.

This kind of project highlights the depth of learning within the course, where students build confidence to experiment, explore trends, and refine their own signature style, an essential skill for anyone looking to build their own client base.

TAFE Queensland’s hands-on training ensures students graduate with practical, industry-ready skills. For Kelly, that meant stepping outside her comfort zone and mastering new techniques.

“I’d never used gel before… my first attempt was terrible! Then I tried again and I was more successful.”

Kelly is completing her course at the Ipswich campus and is training in real-world salon environment, Salon on Mary, using professional-standard tools and equipment that mirror what she’ll use in industry or her own business.

“It’s definitely got everything we need… autoclaves and everything else… the salon is very nice.”

A key benefit of studying at TAFE Queensland is flexibility, supporting students who may already be working, building a side business, or balancing other commitments.

“We completed the course two days a week on campus so you’re able to work in between,” said Kelly.

For Kelly, the supportive and welcoming environment has been a highlight of her experience.

“I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people. I’ve made tons of new friends while being here,” said Kelly.

“My teacher is amazing… everyone’s been so nice and kind.”

TAFE Queensland’s experienced trainers work closely with students, offering guidance that helps build both confidence and capability.

For anyone considering the Certificate III in Nail Technology (SHB30321), Kelly encourages them to take the leap.

“Definitely just give it a go… it takes time and practice, and you will eventually get better.”

Whether you dream of working in an established salon or launching your own brand, this course provides the foundation to build a career on your terms.
