Natasha’s beauty therapy journey takes her to skin clinic success

For Natasha Monahan, studying beauty therapy was more than a pathway to a qualification - it was the start of a career she is genuinely proud to call her own.

At TAFE Queensland, she uncovered the science behind skin treatments, rebuilt her confidence, and found her place in an industry where technical skill and client care go hand in hand.

Now a qualified beauty therapist working in a skin clinic, Natasha is already putting that training into practice - with her sights firmly set on what comes next.

When Natasha enrolled in the Diploma of Beauty Therapy (Spa Treatments) (SHB50121), she was drawn to a career that would allow her to help people feel comfortable and confident in their own skin.

What surprised her was just how quickly that interest grew - particularly as she discovered the clinical knowledge behind each treatment.

“I chose it because I’ve always loved the idea of helping people feel good in their own skin, not just physically, but the confidence that comes with it,” Natasha said.

“What I didn’t expect was how much I would fall in love with the clinical side of it too - the science behind the treatments, the ‘why’ behind every technique we learned.”

The diploma is designed to build advanced beauty therapy skills across specialised skin treatments, massage, spa therapies and professional client consultations.

Students also learn how to recommend beauty products and services while gaining the practical skills needed to work confidently in a professional salon or clinic environment.

For Natasha, that blend of hands-on training and applied science helped clarify the kind of therapist she wanted to become.

Natasha’s path into the beauty industry was not without its challenges. While working in salons during her studies, she encountered difficult managers and workplace environments that tested her confidence.

At times, those experiences made her question whether she had chosen the right industry. But with support from her TAFE Queensland teachers, she began to see her value more clearly.

“My teachers helped me to understand that challenges exist across the beauty industry, and that I had every right to recognise my own value, hold my ground and expect better,” she said.

That guidance proved just as valuable as the technical skills she was developing in the classroom.

“Our teachers didn’t just teach us how to perform a treatment - they taught us how to care about our clients and about ourselves.”

Alongside her teachers, Natasha’s classmates became another important source of encouragement.

As part of a small beauty cohort, she spent hours practising treatments and honing her craft - from facials and waxing to lash lifts.

Together, they supported each other through assessments, celebrated when techniques clicked, and laughed through the inevitable mistakes along the way.

“We were a small class, but a close one, and I’m so proud of every single one of us for sticking it out to the end,” Natasha said.

She believes the friendships formed at TAFE Queensland will continue well beyond graduation and into their careers.

One of Natasha’s strongest memories was seeing the impact of her skills on a client for the first time - watching the client’s face light up as she looked at her glowing, dewy skin in the hand mirror.

“That was the moment I realised this wasn’t just a job I was training for. It was giving people confidence in their own beauty, and that’s something I could be proud of,” Natasha said.

For Natasha, that moment summed up what beauty therapy is all about: combining technical knowledge and practical skill with the ability to make a real difference to how someone feels.

TAFE Queensland beauty students develop those skills in operational beauty salons, working with professional products and equipment while delivering services to real clients.

For Natasha, graduating from TAFE Queensland is not the end of the journey - it is the launchpad for the career she has been working towards.

Now working in a skin clinic, she is looking forward to deepening her knowledge of clinical treatments and client consultations while building on the foundation she developed at TAFE Queensland.

“This diploma wasn’t an ending; it was the beginning of a career I’m genuinely proud of.”

Her advice to anyone considering beauty therapy is simple:

“Trust yourself. You know more, and you can do more than you think,” she said.

And while a first shift as a qualified therapist can feel nerve-racking, Natasha believes those nerves are often a sign that you care about doing your best.

Her story shows what can happen when determination is matched with the right training, supportive teachers and a network of classmates, family and friends who believe in you.
