Pan goes from philosophy to cyber security future
When Pan Tsimarakis moved from Greece to Australia, he never imagined he would be leading cyber security initiatives for a major Australian agricultural business.
Today, the TAFE Queensland Master of Cyber Security (HED009) graduate is applying his advanced skills in a professional IT role at Camm Agricultural Group, helping to protect critical business systems and infrastructure.
Pan's pathway into cyber security wasn't a traditional one. After completing a Bachelor of Philosophy and History of Science in Greece, he relocated to Australia and enrolled in a university program to study cyber security.
While studying, he realised he wanted a learning experience that would offer more practical industry engagement alongside the theory.
"I wanted a course that would help me grow professionally and give me hands-on experience, not just theory," Pan said.
His search led him to TAFE Queensland's Master of Cyber Security (HED009), a postgraduate qualification designed to develop technically skilled cyber security professionals with expertise in governance, policy, risk management and emerging cyber threats.
The course combines advanced technical training with industry-based learning opportunities to prepare graduates for leadership roles in the growing cyber security sector.
From the moment he arrived at TAFE Queensland’s South Bank campus, he noticed the difference.
"The infrastructure was exceptional, from the laptops to the equipment available to students. Everything was up to date and relevant to what we're using in industry today," he said.
With small class sizes and direct access to industry-experienced educators, Pan found himself immersed in a highly personalised and condensed learning environment.
"My teacher was very engaged with his students and worked alongside us. He didn't just leave us to figure things out ourselves and was always available to help,” he said.
One of the defining moments of Pan's study journey came through TAFE Queensland's industry connections and commitment to work-integrated learning.
As part of his studies, he completed a placement embedded within Division 5, where he gained real-world experience applying cyber security principles in a professional environment.
"The placement was probably the most important part of the course for me. It gave me practical experience and helped me understand how cyber security works in the real world,” he explained.
Complementing the master's practical curriculum, his placement included cyber security risk and incident management, information and network security, penetration testing and defence, cyber security governance, emerging threats, project management and professional projects.
Master of Cyber Security students also have access to immersive learning environments that simulate real-world cyber security operations and incident response scenarios.
"The training was relevant and engaging, and everything we learned connected to what employers are looking for and what we do in the workplace," Pan said.
The combination of practical learning and industry experience helped him build capabilities in networking, cloud technologies and cyber security operations, while developing the confidence to enter the workforce.
Now, he draws on those skills every day in his role with Camm Agricultural Group.
"I'm in a very interesting position because I do a bit of everything. I work across cyber security, Azure administration, endpoint solutions and systems management," he said.
"My TAFE Queensland studies definitely helped me build the confidence and technical knowledge to do the role I'm in now."
Pan believes the strong support from teachers and the opportunity to gain industry experience were also critical to his success.
"The placement, the support and the practical nature of the training all helped to get me where I am today," he said.
As a TAFE Queensland Master of Cyber Security graduate, Pan's journey demonstrates the opportunities available to students from diverse backgrounds who are willing to embrace new challenges.
From arriving in Australia with a non-IT degree to securing a professional cyber security role, he has already undergone a remarkable career transformation that has shaped his long-term career ambition.
"My ultimate career goal is to become a Chief Information Officer. It's a challenge that will require a lot of experience, but the Master of Cyber Security degree helped me understand the pathway and gave me a strong foundation to build on,” he said.
For Pan, the combination of industry-connected learning, practical experience and dedicated educator support has already delivered on its promise.
"I would absolutely recommend TAFE Queensland to others. It gives you the skills, the confidence and the experience to build a cyber security career,” Pan concluded.
