Powering the future: J block ignites new pathways into electrical careers in the Redlands

A new chapter in trade training has been switched on at Alexandra Hills, with the opening of the purpose-built electrical training facility that is designed to meet growing demand and power the next generation of skilled electricians.

Purpose-built for electrotechnology, J Block will expand the campus into a dedicated training hub, offering modern facilities, hands-on learning environments and clearer pathways into apprenticeships and industry.

“This building creates more opportunity for people who want to study electrotechnology in the Redlands area,” said Acting Business Manager Dylan Smith.

Alexandra Hills campus is still delivering training for the crowd who are looking for that career start by doing their Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) (UEE22020) entry-level course, and for those who are looking to become a qualified electrician, there is the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820) to progress your career.

When it opens for training delivery, the facility will feature five specialised learning spaces, including practical workshops for wiring and installation, technical training areas for motors and systems, and dedicated classrooms for theory, giving students the opportunity to build real-world skills from day one. Working alongside existing facilities, the new electrical building will position Alexandra Hills campus as a key local destination to begin or progress a trade career.

The timing of the opening aligns with growing industry demand for skilled electricians across Queensland.

“There is strong demand for tradies across the board, and electrical in particular is experiencing significant growth,” Mr Smith said.
“With major population growth and upcoming infrastructure demand, the need for skilled workers is only going to increase.”

For prospective students, that demand is already translating into real opportunity, whether you’re starting out, changing careers or progressing into an apprenticeship pathway.

“We’re creating a viable campus for the future, supporting school students, career changers and apprentices all in one place,” Mr Smith said.

Flexible delivery options will also support students looking to transition into the electrical trade while balancing work and life commitments, which helps make it easier to take that first step into a new career.

“We’ve designed courses so people can retrain while continuing to work,” Dylan said.

A key strength of the training offering is the depth of industry expertise within the teaching team, spanning domestic and commercial work as well as specialised areas such as solar, data systems and large-scale power generation.

“Our teachers are top-notch and bring varied industry experience,” Mr Smith said.
“That exposure helps students discover where they want to take their careers.”

The opening also marks an important milestone for the Redlands community, where many students have historically had to travel outside the region to access trade training.

“At every event, we’d hear from parents asking why their child had to travel for training,” Mr Smith said.
“We’re building that capability right here in the community.”

As Alexandra Hills campus continues to grow, the new electrical building opening represents more than just a new facility. It’s a gateway to future careers, giving locals the opportunity to train close to home and move confidently into a high-demand industry.

With doors set to open in July 2026, the new J Block will help power the next generation of electricians, offering a practical, local pathway for anyone ready to start their trade journey.
