Rising baker takes top prize at Toowoomba Royal Show

Behind every successful apprentice is a team of educators and industry mentors helping them build the skills and confidence to succeed.

TAFE Queensland baking apprentice Aaron Kruger has taken home top honours at this year’s Toowoomba Royal Show, showcasing the high-level skills being developed through vocational training and strong industry partnerships.

Aaron, a third-year apprentice baker at Theos' Bakery, is completing his Certificate III in Baking (FBP30521) with TAFE Queensland.

His talent was on full display at the prestigious King of Bakers Bread Show, where he achieved outstanding results across multiple categories.

Aaron was awarded first place in both the Apprentice Cake (Years 3 & 4) and Apprentice Bread (Years 3 & 4) categories, before being named Most Successful Apprentice for 2026 - an impressive achievement that reflects his dedication to the craft.

The results highlight the important role TAFE Queensland baking educators play in helping apprentices refine their technical skills through hands-on training and industry expertise.

Aaron’s success is also a testament to the strong partnership between TAFE Queensland and industry employers like Geordy Theodosis, owner of Theos’ Bakery and a long-time supporter of vocational training and the baking competition at the Toowoomba Royal Show.

Through programs such as the Certificate III in Baking, apprentices gain the practical skills needed to build a successful career in the baking industry.

The course combines bread, pastry and cake-making, allowing students to produce and process dough, diagnose and respond to product faults, prepare fillings and batters, and decorate cakes while learning how to modify and create new recipes.

Demand for skilled bakers continues to grow across Australia, creating strong career opportunities for graduates seeking roles as retail bakers or pastry chefs.

With dedicated educators, supportive employers and hands-on training, apprentices like Aaron are proving that vocational education can open the door to rewarding careers - and award-winning results.
