Security training for a growing industry
As Australia prepares for major international events including the Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2027 and the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, TAFE Queensland is helping train the next generation of job-ready security officers.
Delivered at TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus, the Certificate II in Security Operations (CPP20218) gives students the foundations for a Queensland security licence while building practical skills in communication, risk management and de-escalation.
TAFE Queensland Security Operations educator Troy Knap said modern security work is about much more than physical presence.
“Knowing how to de-escalate a situation and having the confidence to talk to people is the main key,” Mr Knap said. “If students can learn to communicate and problem-solve, they have a strong foundation for a career in this industry.”
Mr Knap brings extensive industry experience to the classroom, having worked across the Australian defence force and licensed venues, events, hospitals and major sporting environments in South East Queensland.
“You see security officers in shopping centres, hotels, clubs, hospitals, festivals, concerts, and sporting events, but there are also roles in courthouses, cash-in-transit, bodyguard work and control rooms,” he said.
“It’s a massive industry, and there will always be a need for people to feel safe.”
In Queensland, people wanting to work as licensed unarmed security officers must complete the Certificate II in Security Operations (CPP20218) through a registered training organisation before applying for their licence.
The nationally recognised qualification prepares students for roles involving patrolling, protecting or guarding property, screening entry, monitoring behaviour and supporting safe environments.
Mr Knap said that training pipeline will become increasingly important as Queensland prepares for a growing calendar of major events and continued demand across retail, hospitality, tourism, events and public venues.
TAFE Queensland’s course combines theory, practical activities and scenario-based learning to help students build confidence before entering the workforce.
“If you make the mistakes in a learning environment, you are prepared for the real world and can respond safely and effectively,” Mr Knap said.
He encouraged anyone considering the industry to give the course a go, particularly those looking for flexible work, practical skills and a qualification that can open the door to a wide range of roles.
“Once you complete the course and obtain your licence, there are opportunities to work casually, at events, or across different parts of the industry,” Mr Knap said. “Having that licence in your back pocket gives you the ability to work and build experience.
“It can also be a useful starting point for those considering broader public safety careers, including policing, corrections, defence or emergency services,” he said.
Security is a growing industry, with employment increasing by approximately 2,600 jobs annually and workforce growth of 4 per cent per year, well above the national workforce average of 1.5 per cent (https://www.jobsandskills.gov.au).
