Shaping skilled carpenters for Queensland’s future

Just like every great structure begins with a solid foundation, a career in carpentry offers Queensland residents the perfect base on which to build a strong and rewarding future.

For Karalee-based TAFE Queensland apprentice Daniel Casey (pictured above), the choice was clear from the beginning.

“I liked doing woodwork in school and I like working outside. I didn't want to sit in an office all day,” he said.

Now Daniel is completing his Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) and is already dreaming big.

“I want to set up my own building company. Build nice big houses… One day I want to build my own home.”

Fellow apprentice Alex Savage, who comes from Rosewood, is also completing the training component of his trade at TAFE Queensland’s Ipswich campus.

Daniel and Alex benefit from access to specialist training facilities and modern workshops at the Ipswich campus, giving them opportunities to practice their skills in an environment that is like a worksite.

Equipped with industry‑grade tools, machinery, and materials, the campus offers a safe and controlled space for apprentices to refine their craft while undertaking practical project work that simulates real job scenarios.

For Alex carpentry was a natural step after working across the broader construction sector.

“I was already working in the construction industry, and it was a good fit, something I always wanted to do anyway,” he explained.

Choosing an apprenticeship felt right for him.

“I figured I was going to learn the best that way… it was straightforward and simple.”

As apprentices, both Daniel and Alex experience the best of both worlds — hands‑on industry experience through their employers, paired with practical, skills‑focused training delivered by industry‑experienced trades professionals at TAFE Queensland.

TAFE Queensland’s carpentry programs, including the Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220), are designed to equip apprentices with the essential skills needed to thrive in Queensland’s booming construction industry.

Delivered through a combination of structured training blocks on-campus and workplace practice, apprentices learn everything from interpreting plans and measuring materials to constructing walls, installing fixtures, using power tools safely, and applying industry‑standard building techniques.

For apprentices like Daniel and Alex, TAFE Queensland has provided more than just technical know‑how. It has offered a clear pathway to a stable, in‑demand trade and the confidence to imagine what their futures in the construction industry might look like.

Whether they aspire to become licensed carpenters, site supervisors, builders, or business owners, apprentices benefit from TAFE Queensland’s industry‑connected training which supports them from their first day in the workshop and continues well beyond the completion of their apprenticeship.
