From apprentice to future builder: Tim Poole’s journey in carpentry

For Tim Poole, becoming a carpenter wasn’t just a career choice, it was a lifestyle built on passion, practicality, and a clear vision for the future.

Currently studying a Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) at TAFE Queensland, Tim is also a proud recipient of a TAFE Queensland Scholarship. His journey highlights both the rewards and realities of pursuing a trade, and the difference the right support can make.

Tim works with Natural Lifestyle Homes, a Bardon-based company specialising in high-end renovations, particularly heritage-listed Queenslanders and homes over 100 years old. From Red Hill to Brisbane’s northside, he is part of a team that brings new life to classic homes while preserving their history.

While the work is rewarding, Tim is honest about the financial challenges of being an apprentice. The costs extend far beyond tuition–  tools, fuel, vehicle upgrades, and even increased living expenses due to the physical demands of the job all add up.

“Being an apprentice is quite expensive, there’s a lot more that goes into it than I thought,” he said.

“You’ve got your car, your fuel, power tools, hand tools… and even just the physical work means you’re spending more on things like food and looking after yourself.”

From upgrading his vehicle to investing in tools and maintaining his physical fitness, Tim’s experience reflects a common challenge faced by many apprentices.

Receiving a TAFE Queensland Scholarship was a significant moment for Tim.

“My reaction was very positive, I can’t lie, I was really happy,” he shared. “It makes a huge difference because tools are not cheap, and it’s definitely helped me build up my tools.”

The financial support has allowed Tim to focus on learning and developing his skills, rather than being held back by upfront costs that are often essential in trades like carpentry.

For Tim, the hands-on learning experience at TAFE Queensland is what sets it apart.

“The difference between Uni and TAFE is massive,” he says. “I’d take working on site over sitting in a classroom any day.”

He also values the informal learning that happens beyond the course material.

“You learn so much from the educators and other students. Even seeing apprentices who are further along than you, it helps a lot,” he explained.

Tim’s ambitions extend well beyond his current qualification. After completing his Certificate III, he plans to continue studying a Certificate IV in Building and Construction to become a licensed builder, with the long-term goal of running his own company specialising in high-end homes across Brisbane.

“I enjoy working with my hands, being outdoors, and building something real that I can look at, at the end of the job,” Tim said.

“Eventually, I’d like to run my own company and build large homes.”

He encourages anyone considering an apprenticeship to take the first step.

“If it’s what you’re thinking you want to do, just give it a try. There’s nothing wrong with giving it a go.”

Tim also highlights the importance of strengthening the trades workforce in Australia.

“I think Australia needs more tradies, especially carpenters – supporting apprentices makes a big difference.”

The TAFE Queensland Scholarship Foundation plays a vital role in supporting students like Tim.

As a registered charitable initiative, it brings together support from industry, government, and the community to help students overcome financial and personal barriers to education.

Through scholarships, the Foundation provides practical financial assistance for study-related costs such as tools, fees, and living expenses, ensuring students can focus on completing their qualifications.

By improving access to training and supporting students to succeed, the Foundation helps create real opportunities and strengthens Australia’s future workforce.

Stories like Tim’s demonstrate the lasting impact of this support, empowering individuals to build their careers and contribute meaningfully to their industries.
