Turning a passion for the water into a career

Bailey Markovic grew up on the water, so when it came time to choose a career, he decided to turn his love of all things marine into a profession.

He is currently completing his Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (MEM30219) through an apprenticeship with Stella Marine Group, a key player in Coomera’s booming marine industry.

As part of his apprenticeship, Bailey works hands-on to craft high-quality equipment used on boats around the world.

“We’re making our hydraulic swim platform lifters that go on the back of a boat; it allows you to drop that platform down into the water,” explained Bailey.

“We also make davits and sliding tender launches for your little tinnies.”

Undertaking his apprenticeship in Coomera, one of Australia’s fastest-growing hubs for marine manufacturing, Bailey gains invaluable real-world experience in a thriving industry.

“Seeing the finished product on the boats, that’s a really good feeling,” he said.

Bailey’s day-to-day tasks align with the skills he’s learning at TAFE Queensland, allowing him to apply theory to real projects.

“It’s the MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding I learned at TAFE Queensland - it’s all the little things, like the angle and how to shoot it into the metal, they taught me there,” he said.

Stella Marine Group owner Gary Cooper said the region’s rapid growth has created strong demand for skilled tradespeople and dedicated apprentices.

“We’re trying to bring young apprentices through so that we can actually get more skilled trades into the field, into the marine industry,” said Gary.

“We’re always looking to grow the business, we have enough work, we’ve just got to get enough staff to cope with that.”

“We’re looking for apprentices who enjoy what they’re doing and have a thirst for knowledge; Bailey fits the bill perfectly.”

With every part he produces, Bailey is not just building boats, he’s building his future.

“I’d love to go around the world and work in different places,” he said.
