Bracing herself for a new career
For most people, a trip to the dentist is terrifying, but not for Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics (HED004) student, Keely Horne, who is pursuing her dream of creating beautiful smiles.
Hailing from Cairns, Keely decided to move to Brisbane to study the bachelor after a visit to the orthodontist to get braces – and instead of being terrified, she was fascinated.
“The tools, equipment, processes and the result - I just knew working in the dental field was my calling,” says Keely.
After researching dental courses, Keely decided that the Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics (HED004) from TAFE Queensland was exactly where she wanted to study.
The Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics (HED004) is nationally recognised and endorsed as an accredited course by the Australian Dental Council (ADC) and approved by the Dental Board of Australia.
While at TAFE Queensland, all students are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) by TAFE Queensland.
Students learn from knowledgeable industry experts with real-world experience, helping them every step of the way enabling them to graduate job-ready.
The course also equips students to put a smile on people’s faces every day by teaching them the skills required to provide patients with complete and partial dentures, dental appliances, and mouth-guards.
“Studying at TAFE Queensland is amazing – the teachers are incredibly helpful and the smaller class sizes mean I get vital one-on-one time to practise my skills."
“I love studying in the lab and practising with the same equipment you’d find in any dental practice in Australia,” says Keely.
To help students to further brush up on their dental prosthetics skills is connecting them with real patients – allowing students the opportunity to develop the people skills required to treat patients who find a visit to the dentist stressful.
“The work we do with live patients is amazing too – getting impressions, making moulds, constructing dentures and checking my patient’s bites helps me to put the course theory into practice."
“I’m looking forward to graduating and helping to give patients their best possible smiles,” concludes Keely.
