Prepare for your career in resources and infrastructure with this foundation course. Start building your skills ready for work. The demand for workers in civil construction and mining is forecast to be steady over the next five years as major projects generate activity in the industry.

In this qualification you will learn basic skills and operational knowledge of the requirements of working in the resources and infrastructure industry. You will learn the basics of occupational health and safety, environmentally sound practices and local risk control. You will use hand and power tools and handle resources and infrastructure materials to perform routine tasks and procedures.

Successful completion of this course will set you up to take on a certificate III to develop your skills further. You may also apply for work as an assistant or support worker in the mining or civil construction sector.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • leather gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection
  • You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing.

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Assessment methods
