Child Safe at TAFE

TAFE Queensland is committed to a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment for all students.

We place special importance on the wellbeing of our students who are under 18, ensuring they feel safe, supported, respected, and heard.

At TAFE Queensland, we actively promote child safety and are focused on protecting young learners from harm, ensuring our students, staff, and stakeholders are part of our Child Safe at TAFE culture.

What does this mean for students?

As a student, you can expect:

  • every staff member is trained to respond to concerns
  • you are encouraged to speak up if something doesn't feel right
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural safety is embedded in everything we do.

You have a right to speak up, and we'll take you seriously.

Remember the three Rs

At TAFE Queensland, we encourage everyone to follow the three Rs to help keep our learning environment child safe.

As a student, you can:

Recognise

Recognise when there is a concern for child safety. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and take note.

Report

Raise what you’ve noticed and share your concerns with a TAFE Queensland staff member or through our student complaints and feedback process.

Record

TAFE Queensland registers any reported concerns to ensure we respond appropriately.

Why does being Child Safe at TAFE matter?

More than 1 in 5 TAFE Queensland students are under 18. Many are undertaking our TAFE at School courses, while others are enrolled in vocational or foundation courses. No matter age, background, or course, TAFE Queensland students have the right to feel safe and be treated with respect.

TAFE Queensland is child safe and has outlined our commitment to child safety under the Child Safe Organisation Act 2024 in our Statement of Commitment.

Frequently asked questions

The Child Safety Project is a TAFE Queensland initiative to make sure all students, especially those under 18, feel safe, respected, and supported while studying. It’s part of our commitment to being a ‘safety first’ organisation and creating inclusive learning environments across all campuses and online.

Even though TAFE Queensland is a vocational education provider, more than 1 in 5 of our students are under 18. That includes many students in TAFE at School (VETiS) courses and younger learners in other courses. We want every student to feel safe and supported, no matter their age, background, or study path.

This is a new Queensland law that makes it mandatory for organisations like TAFE Queensland to meet strict safety standards when working with children and young people. It was introduced after the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to help protect children and young people in organisational settings.

We’re taking important steps to meet the requirements of the Child Safe Organisations Act 2024, including:

  • Putting in place 10 Child Safe Standards and a Universal Principle of Cultural Safety by 1 January 2026
  • Introducing a Reportable Conduct Scheme by 1 July 2026

These changes help ensure that all students, especially those under 18, are safe and supported.

If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable, or if you’re worried about someone else, please speak up. You can talk to a trusted teacher, support staff member, or contact TAFE Queensland’s student support services. We’re here to listen and help.

TAFE Queensland values student input, ideas, and feedback. One of the key ways you can get involved is through Student Voice — a framework that empowers students to actively shape how we do things at TAFE Queensland.
