Kick start your beauty therapy career with this entry-level qualification. This course is a minimum requirement to work as a beauty therapist or make-up artist.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the beauty therapy industry is currently experiencing very strong growth with around 25,000 job openings expected over the next five years. Employers are looking for qualified candidates who are reliable, well presented, and interact well with others.

You will learn a core set of skills including lash and brow services, how to design and apply make-up, manicure and pedicure services and providing salon services to clients. You'll be guided by our expert teaching team who maintain strong industry connections.

Courses delivered on campus may have a combination of online and classroom based learning. Students are expected to undertake additional personal study to complete the course requirements.

You must be a Year 10, 11 or 12 student enrolled at a participating high school. In addition, the duration of your TAFE at School course cannot be longer than your remaining high school studies. Speak to your high school guidance counsellor or careers advisor for more information.

You must already be employed to enrol as an apprentice or trainee with TAFE Queensland. Speak to your employer about choosing TAFE Queensland as your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).

Costs:

Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a set fee per nominal hour. These fees are calculated at a regulated rate of $1.60 per nominal hour. Concession rates apply for students who hold a current Health Care Card or who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. These will be confirmed prior to the commencement of training.
Information regarding costs will be outlined on the agreed training plan, which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee at time of induction.

Selection criteria

It is highly recommended that students have basic literacy, numeracy and computer skills or equivalent to Year 10, turned 16 or have relevant experience and/or qualifications that indicate likely success in completing the course.

South Bank campus only
Due to the high volume of applicants wishing to undertake this program, Greater Brisbane has introduced a selection criteria ranking process which requires all applicants to undertake a Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) maths and english assessment to determine current level of literacy and numeracy.
Applicants who receive an Exit Level 2 Working at Level 3 score (or higher) on the BKSB will receive a higher ranking than students with a lower score. The BKSB identifies any areas you may need additional support to achieve your goals and ensure you have the right skills and support to be successful in your course.

Traineeship pathway
To study a traineeship program you must be indentured as a trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide necessary human and physical resources to qualify for a trainee.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You are responsible for meeting the minimum standard of dress. This includes having access to and wearing a black shirt, black tailored pants (no leggings, jeans, skirts or shorts), and enclosed black shoes.

You may also be required to purchase an equipment kit that contains items required for performing beauty services. Please note: the purchase of this kit may incur additional costs of $350 to $550. More details will be provided at enrolment or during orientation session.

Greater Brisbane only
You will be required to purchase TAFE Queensland branded uniforms (Navy pants and top set), this may incur additional costs of up to $100.
You will need to supply your own comfortable/flat white shoes and beauty kits. More details will be provided after enrolment or during orientation.

Important personal abilities required. The learner should:

Be well groomed at all times

Be tolerant of working in confined spaces
Be sensitive to client’s personal space and requirements
Have strong communication skills
Be comfortable with physical contact with clients
Be tolerant of late and changeable work hours
Be comfortable with both providing and receiving treatments from other students during the course

Key Activities

Ability to sit, stand and bend for reasonable periods of time
Ability to deal with clients and give full attention, taking time to understand and ask questions as appropriate when dealing with client services or complaints (active listening)
Ability to handle and control tools, electrical equipment and perform massage routines (manual dexterity)
Ability to be exact and accurate and work within time constraints (efficiency)
Ability to perform mathematical functions such as measuring, calculating quantities and costs

Industry Requirements
Practitioners in this industry are required to work closely with their clients while they provide personal beauty services. This could include removing body hair by waxing, performing massage routines relative to treatment, performing skin analysis, providing advice, recommending and selling of cosmetic products and performing reception duties such as telephone answering, appointment making and client enquiries. As a result the Practitioner is expected to respect the client’s privacy, maintain confidentiality and provide personal beauty services with absolute professionalism.
You are required to have your hair tied back and have short natural nails (no artificial nails). All facial piercings are to be removed (and during certain practical classes body piercings will need to be removed). No jewellery to be worn with the exception of a pair of studs in the lower ear and a wedding ring.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
