Course overview

Make a start on your fashion career with this entry-level course. You will graduate with a portfolio of work and be qualified to work as an assistant designer.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as fashion, industrial and jewellery designers grew very strongly over the past five years. Growth in the sector is expected to remain steady with around 4,000 job openings expected in the next five years.

This course will give you the skills you need to draw and interpret basic sketches, modify patterns to create basic styles, identify fibres, fabrics and textiles, and use electronic fashion design tools. Our highly experienced and passionate teaching team have years of industry experience and will give you the one-on-one guidance needed to prepare you for a career in fashion.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work as a fashion design assistant. It will also give you the core skills needed to undertake further study in this field.

Industry-standard facilities

Our custom-built fashion facilities include multiple learning spaces designed to encourage hands-on, collaborative work. Students have access to a lab fitted out with various industrial sewing machines, irons and cutting tables. Pattern making studios and lecture rooms feature both communal tables and individual cubicles where students will have access to the latest digital design software.

Upgrade your qualification

Take your studies further. Successful completion of this course will see you graduate with a portfolio of garment samples and the opportunity to transition straight into second semester of the Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising. This will enable you to commence your diploma-to-degree pathway option.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

You must have completed year 10 or equivalent.
Enrolment Conditions apply for students under 17 years of age.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.


You will be required to have access to and bring to class a Sewing Kit. Details will be provided after enrolment or during orientation. The purchase of this kit may incur additional costs of up to $175. In addition you are required to purchase fabric and material’s throughout the duration of the course. All costs will be at your own expense and will support your designs requirements.

Please note: all students must wear closed in shoes during classes, as all classes are held in simulated work environments.

Transition statement

Replacement qualification
This qualification has been replaced by MST31022 - Certificate III in Apparel, Fashion and Textiles, as of 21 December 2022. A transition period applies to enable current students to complete their study. The transition period finishes on 20 December 2023.
