How it works

To be eligible for this program, you need to have successfully completed a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820) and have current electrical experience.

You will also need to be willing to work in one of the following locations where qualified electrical trainers are currently in high demand: Mount Isa, Townsville, Cairns, Chinchilla, Kingaroy, Toowoomba, Nambour, or Bundaberg.

If eligible, you will complete a fully funded, fee-free traineeship through TAFE Queensland as a Foundation Educator. At the end of the 12- month traineeship, successful candidates will receive a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122) and be offered a teaching position at TAFE Queensland.

Incentives and scholarships

In addition to the funded training, you’ll also receive a once-off $20,000 incentive payment to help you make the transition from tradesperson to trainer. The incentive will be paid in two instalments:

  • $10,000 at the end of the six-month probationary period with TAFE Queensland
  • $10,000 on successful completion of the training.

Additional scholarships up to $5,000 are also available to support First Nations people, women, and people in regional and remote areas of Queensland* to take up the traineeship opportunity. The scholarship will be paid in two instalments:

Frequently asked questions

The Electrical Industry Trainer and Assessor Traineeship and Scholarship Pilot (the pilot) is designed to help experienced electricians transition into training and assessment roles to support Queensland’s growing demand for skilled tradespeople.

With more people starting electrical apprenticeships, there is a rising need for qualified trainers and assessors. However, Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) are struggling to recruit trainers, causing delays in apprentice training – a critical issue in an industry where safety is paramount.

This program aims to increase the number of qualified trainers and assessors by supporting electricians considering a career shift. Participants will complete a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment as a fully funded, fee-free traineeship over 12 months (with a 60-day probationary period). Eligible trainees may also receive scholarships and financial incentives, and participating RTOs will be supported to expand training capacity.

TAFE Queensland hires participants as Foundation Educators on a fixed-term temporary basis while they complete their qualification. Although they train under the traineeship model, their official role is Foundation Educator within TAFE Queensland.

To apply, you must:

  • Hold a Certificate III in Electrotechnology - Electrician (or equivalent)
  • Have industry experience in the electrical field
  • Be willing and able to complete a fee-free Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

We are hiring Foundation Educators in:

  • Mount Isa
  • Townsville
  • Cairns
  • Chinchilla
  • Kingaroy
  • Toowoomba
  • Nambour
  • Bundaberg
