Course overview

This introductory course will teach you fundamental jewellery making techniques using the jeweller’s saw, the art of heat control and soldering, jewellery component, chain and ring making, along with the principles of forging and doming.  You will be able to create a piece of finished wearable jewellery, or small set within the 4 weeks.

Entry requirements

As teachers, we are passionate about what we do and strive to create the best and safest possible experience for everyone. The course does involve safe instruction in the use of specialised jewellery equipment, including power tools, chemicals and naked flame. If you have difficulty with hand tools and specific guidance, or have any other concerns about this course, please reach out to discuss it with us.

Selection criteria

No experience necessary, equipment supplied - additional costs for materials.

Resources required

Bring design ideas for discussion and note/sketch book (please note; this course does not cover stone setting).  Covered shoes, tied back hair and apron required.

Silver purchased directly from the teacher on the night at $5 to $8 per gram (4 - 10 grams depending on the size of the project so approx. $20 - $50 in silver). Other metals, such as copper and brass are $1 per gram.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
