Skills check

You will be invited to complete a Skills Check following your application submission, before enrolling to your studies. This helps you to decide if your course is right for you and allows us to understand your current abilities in English, Maths, as well as using Digital technology. 

The recommended benchmark levels for this course are 3 in English, 3 in Maths and 3 in Digital Technology.

Selection criteria

It is highly recommended that you have successfully completed Year 10 (or equivalent), are aged 16 or older, or have relevant experience and/or qualifications that indicate likely success in completing the course.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You will also be required to bring the following:

  • Portable external hard drive (1TB)
  • Headphones with 6.5mm adaptor (Bluetooth headphones are unsuitable)
  • Standard “theatre blacks” - the typical technician uniform. Plain black shirt, black trousers, sturdy black enclosed shoes with no logos.
  • Personal stationery

Important information

While this course is based at Mount Gravatt campus, please note that classes and associated activities for the following units will take place at the South Bank campus. You will be required to attend South Bank campus 1 day per week.

  • CUASOU211 Develop basic audio skills and knowledge
  • CUASOU306 Operate sound reinforcement systems
  • CUASMT311 Work effectively backstage during performances

The nature of this course involves working in a team as a crew member. You will be working with equipment and cabling used for audio, lighting, vision systems and staging. You may be required to assist with moving, setting up and packing down this equipment.

Transition statement

This qualification has been replaced by CUA30425 Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services as of 13 August 2025. A transition period applies to enable current students to complete their study. The transition period finishes on 11 August 2026.

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
