Course overview

Take the first step towards a backstage career in the entertainment industry with this entry-level qualification. Develop the basic skills and knowledge to work as an assistant in the box office, props, or stage production at a theatre or other performance venue. Research shows that creativity, communication, and problem-solving will be the most desired skills in the future job market. This qualification will give you the core skills needed to work in this diverse industry.

You will learn how to provide basic assistance in lighting, staging, and audio as well as develop essential knowledge of workplace health and safety and effective creative arts industry work practices. Our team of industry professionals will provide the guidance you need to succeed in our state-of-the-art performance spaces, working on a diverse range of events.

Successful completion of this course will give you the skills and knowledge to work as a box office assistant, props assistant, or stage production assistant in carpentry, lighting systems or vision systems. You will also have a solid foundation to continue with further study in this area.

Our Coomera campus is our creative hub. It boasts industry-standard production facilities including four Non-Linear Editing (NLE) suites, seven sound recording studios, a purpose-built auditorium, large multi-purpose black box theatre studio (sound stage), and state-of-the-art live sound reinforcement and lighting systems.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

It is highly recommended that students have successfully completed Year 10 (or equivalent), are aged 16 or older, or have relevant experience and/or qualifications that indicate likely success in completing the course.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

A recommended reading list and/or required textbooks will be provided after enrolment, during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

Standard “theatre blacks” – the typical technician uniform. Plain black shirt, black trousers, sturdy black enclosed shoes with no logos.

You will also require access to personal stationary and an external hard drive (1TB). Various industry memberships may be recommended throughout your course, and these subscriptions may also incur additional costs.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
