Course overview

This accredited course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to diagnose and safely depower and reinitialise hybrid vehicles. You will learn how to:

  • Identify a hybrid battery electric vehicle and its main components
  • Ensure high voltage (HV) rechargeable energy storage systems (RESS) are safely isolated
  • Be high voltage safety aware
  • Reinitialisation of the energy storage system
  • Safety reinitialise the hybrid electric vehicle

This accredited course will cover the required performance outcomes for individuals to safely depower and reinitialise hybrid vehicles. It involves ensuring that the vehicles high voltage (HV) rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) is isolated in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications before commencing any service or repair work to these vehicles. It also involves the necessary procedures that may need resetting once the energy storage system has been reinitialised. This course also covers information around workshop set up, personal protective equipment (PPE) and special tool requirements.

This course applies to those working in the automotive repair and service industry only. You must have completed an automotive mechanical Certificate III qualification or equivalent.

    Unit description :
    This unit describes the performance outcomes required to depower and reinitialise hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). It involves ensuring that the vehicle high voltage (HV) rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) is isolated before commencing any service or repair work. It also involves calibrating vehicle systems that may need resetting once the energy storage system is reinitialised. Importance is placed in the unit on applying RESS and separated extra low voltage (SELV) electrical safety procedures. It applies to those working in the automotive service and repair industry. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Selection criteria

You must have previous automotive qualifications or be engaged in an apprenticeship and have completed stages one and two.

It is recommended you have language, literacy and numeracy levels to year 10. It is highly recommended that you are computer literate as there is a portion of the course which includes computer work.

You must not have a pacemaker, another medical device, or a condition that can be affected by the strong permanent magnets within an EV, as per AS5732:2022 (Sect 2.1).
