Course overview

If you intend travelling on offshore coastal voyages, or are applying to AMSA for a Certificate of Competence as a Coxswain, Master < 24 or Master < 35, you should obtain an LROCP Certificate which incorporates knowledge of both Medium Frequency/High Frequency (MF/HF) Radios, designed for long range transmission, and VHF radios.

    This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to: - transmit and receive information by marine radio, including using marine very high frequency (VHF) and high frequency (HF) radio according to regulations carry out user maintenance and fault-finding procedures on radio equipment and power supplies - operate emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs), search and rescue radar transponders (SARTs), automatic identification system search and rescue transmitters (AIS-SARTs), AIS man overboard (AIS-MOB) devices and digital selective calling MOB (DSC-MOB) devices.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Students must be 16 years of age, have a minimum of year 10 with a sound achievement in English and Mathematics or the equivalent, or gain mature age entry.

Resources required

You will require a notebook and pen for theory components.

Attire is to be of current industry standard with enclosed footwear to be worn at all times.

Important information

Upon receiving your statement of attainment you can apply to the OMC for a Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP). One current passport size photo will be required for the OMC application and there is a fee payable to the OMC.
