Progress your career in fusion welding with this internationally-recognised short course. This practical course will provide you with the training required to perform fusion (arc) welding procedures to meet the requirements of the international welding standard ISO 9606. 

The Welding Technology Institute of Australia (WTIA) has highlighted an urgent need to build up the number of welders in Australia who are certified to meet the international welding standard ISO 9606. Increasingly, this standard is being specified for major manufacturing and engineering projects such as rail, light rail and tram production, as well as for shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing and defence force contracts. ISO 9606 certified welders are also required for other major works projects such as rail tunnelling, bridge and building construction.

This industry-recognised short course in fusion welding will boost your earning potential, give you better job stability, and qualify you for large-scale welding projects around the globe. Successful completion of this course will certify you to perform fusion welding procedures to meet the requirements of ISO 9606.

Selection criteria

To enter this course as an experienced welder, you are required to have evidence of:

  • Certificate III level welding qualification (such as MEM30305 Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade

OR

  • A minimum of three (3) years fusion welding experience
Resources Required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of safety glasses, protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210, and hair protection. You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing. You may also be required to have access to a welding helmet and welding gloves. If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

A recommended reading list and/or required textbooks will be provided during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You are also required to bring a personal stationary, a USB, a scientific calculator, a metric ruler, scale rule, set squares, protractor, and french curves or flexible ruler (optional).

This accredited course is expiring. A transition period applies to enable current students to complete their study. The transition period finishes on 30 December 2023. Enrolments must be finalised by this date.
