Course overview

Develop or retrain in the skills and knowledge you need to adhere to workplace health and safety (WHS) and electrical installation safety obligations as an electrical work licence holder.

You will learn about WHS requirements for identifying hazards, establishing levels of risk mitigation control, following safe working methods, determining whether an electrical installation is compliant, dealing with installation defects, and documenting activities and outcomes in accordance with the Electrical Safety Act and Regulations of Queensland.  .

Completing this skill set may be required by a related regulatory authority as part of retraining and/or retaining your licence.

Selection criteria

You must hold an electrical workers licence and have held it for a minimum of two years. Refer to the Electrical Safety Office requirements www.eso.qld.gov.au

Resources required

It's highly recommended for you to have a current email address and access to a computer, the internet and the following:

  • Australian Standards (AS): AS3000 Wiring Rules current edition AS3008 
  • Electrical Installations Selection of cables current edition AS3760
  • In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment current edition AS3017
  • Electrical installation - Testing and inspection guidelines current edition AS4741
  • Testing of connections to low voltage electricity networks current edition
  • Legislation: The Electrical Safety Act 2002
  • The Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 Resource: PDF 
  • Electrical Safety Code of Practice
  • Managing Electrical risk in the workplace Queensland Government website

This course consists of online theory work and written assessment with the practical component of each unit being assessed face to face on campus.
