Course overview

This course will introduce you to how an interior designer plans and styles a client’s home.

You will be taken through the necessary steps from receiving the design brief, to finally presenting the design solution to the client.

Throughout the course you will learn the fundamental knowledge required to create a concept, select furnishings and accessories, lay out the furniture to suit the space and the design style, and use 2D and 3D professional communication tools to present your design to the client.

Weekly topics

Week 1

  • What is interior design?
  • Elements and Principles of design
  • Colour theory

Week 2

  • Different Design styles
  • Brief analysis
  • Choosing a style to suit the client’s brief

Week 3

  • Mind maps & Mood Boards
  • Creating a mood board for your client
  • Furniture sourcing using the Style Sourcebook

Week 4

  • Introduction to space planning
  • Understanding scale and interpreting plans
  • Drawing plans & working on individual interior furniture layouts based on a given design brief

Week 5

  • How to present a hand-drawn interior plan
  • Rendering techniques

Week 6

  • Quick intro to SketchUp
  • Using SketchUp to style your client’s room

Week 7

  • Produce a final A3 presentation for clients using PowerPoint or Canva.

You will need to bring:

  • HB pencil
  • eraser
  • biro
  • scissors
  • coloured pencils (standard 12 pack) or water coloured pencils (optional)
  • metal scale ruler (ex Bunnings tool department)
  • fine line black permanent marker
  • glue stick

Other stationery suggestions will be discussed during class.

Please note:  You will need to bring your own refreshments.
