Course overview

Take the next step in your career in elite sport wellbeing with this nationally recognised qualification developed by global leaders in athlete wellbeing. Designed by the Wellbeing Science Institute this course will build your capability to support elite athletes, coaches and officials through evidence-based skills, structured assessments and practical industry immersion.

This course will explore the full spectrum of athlete wellbeing including mental health, concussion support, performance psychology, resilience, sleep science, cultural competence, diversity and inclusion, life design, transitions, and financial wellbeing.

You will also learn how to design and implement customised wellbeing plans, create organisation-wide wellbeing strategies, and develop the professional judgement required to work in complex elite sporting environments.

This course is delivered through virtual seminars, self-paced learning, syndicate work and project-based assessment, enabling you to build a comprehensive wellbeing toolkit to use within your organisation.

Skills check

You will be invited to complete a Skills Check following your application submission, before enrolling to your studies. This helps you to decide if your course is right for you and allows us to understand your current abilities in English, Maths, as well as using Digital technology. 

The recommended benchmark levels for this course are 4 in English, 4 in Maths and 4 in Digital Technology.

If you are applying for a VET Student Loan the required levels to meet academic eligibility, as outlined by Commonwealth guidelines, is Level 4 English and Maths.

Selection criteria

To enrol in this course you must:

  • be minimum of 21 years of age
  • have one nominated sporting, or similar high-performance organisation with whom you can engage with (paid or unpaid) for the duration of the course (i.e.athlete/coach and a stakeholder)
    This ensures real-world application of the wellbeing strategies and provides an opportunity to implement program tasks directly in an industry environment.
  • have a minimum of two of
    • relevant qualification including
      • Certificate II and above in the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Industry
      • Certificate IV in Career Development
      • Certificate II level or above in Counselling; and/or
    • minimum 12 months’ employment as an athlete welfare/wellbeing manager or similar role; or
    • comparable work/life experience
    • high level language, literacy and numeracy levels sufficient to engage in the online seminars, complete self-directed study and assignment, complete athlete wellbeing plans and complete the end of course assessment. ACSF Level 3 minimum.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You will also require access to:

  • a Microsoft Windows 10 or 11 Operating System laptop or PC
  • a portable Hard Drive preferably a 500 Gigabyte Solid State Drive (SSD)
  • headphones and suitable webcam
  • access to a sporting organisation for project-based tasks

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
