Course overview

This skill set is designed for workers within the animal care industry seeking to extend their skills and knowledge from domestic animal care into wildlife care and rehabilitation.

The course has been structured to support part time study alongside current employment, enabling you to enhance the care of native wildlife presented to general practice veterinary clinics, rescue organisations, and wildlife rehabilitation facilities. The skill set provides industry relevant knowledge and practical skills applicable to the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of wildlife and supports career progression into roles within wildlife hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and sanctuaries. It is intended to complement existing qualifications such as the Certificate III in Animal Studies or the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, strengthening employability and pathways within the wildlife care sector.

Entry requirements

Selection criteria

This skill set is for those working as native wildlife carers in the animal care and management industry.

You must hold a Certificate III in Animal Care ServicesCertificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or equivalent 2 year's experience in industry.

Resources required

Work appropriate clothing including:

  • enclosed shoes
  • long pants
  • plain t-shirt or polo shirt
  • hat
  • sunglasses

Placement

Limited placement may be available at the below wildlife hospitals:

  • RSPCA (Wacol)
  • Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital

10-14 days (depending on the facility) will be available per student to complete practical tasks.

Important information

Provided placements in wildlife facilities are limited. If you already have suitable exposure to wildlife care facilities you will be able to complete your placement in your current facility. Pre-enrolment interviews will be required to determine facility suitability.
