Course overview

Delivered by Q Academy on behalf of TAFE Queensland, this course equips you with advanced skills in soft tissue therapy, biomechanics and remedial massage. You'll learn how to assess and treat a range of musculoskeletal conditions while supporting athletes through training, competition and recovery. 

Gain the skills to tailor remedial massage treatments to meet the unique needs of your clients, develop injury management and home-care plans, and apply advanced techniques including muscle energy techniques, myofascial release, joint mobilisation, trigger point therapy, deep tissue massage and sports massage.

Successful completion of this qualification will enable you to work as a remedial massage therapist and provides a pathway to further specialised therapies and advanced clinical practice.

On completion of the diploma, you'll be eligible to apply for provider status with private health funds, allowing eligible clients to claim rebates for your services.

Entry requirements

Skills check

You will be invited to complete a Skills Check following your application submission, before enrolling to your studies. This helps you to decide if your course is right for you and allows us to understand your current abilities in English, Maths, as well as using Digital technology. 

The recommended benchmark levels for this course are 4 in English, 4 in Maths and 3 in Digital Technology.

If you are applying for a VET Student Loan the required levels to meet academic eligibility, as outlined by Commonwealth guidelines, is Level 4 English and Maths.

Selection criteria

It is highly recommended that students are aged 18 or older by the course commencement date.

Resources required

Online delivery
You must have access to a tablet, laptop or computer, with a camera, microphone, internet access, and a printer.

You are required to have access to a massage table and willing volunteers to practise on while completing their online assessments. Please note that required clinic hours are additional to these practice and assessment requirements.

You are also responsible for meeting the minimum standard of dress. This includes having access to and wearing a plain polo shirt, black pants (no skirt, leggings or jeans), and enclosed shoes. More details will be provided after enrolment or during orientation.

Important information

On successful completion of this course you will be able to apply to become a member of any National Massage Association and apply for health fund rebate status providing you meet their requirements. Please note: If you are hoping to apply for health rebate status for all health funds attendance at all scheduled classes is extremely important in order to meet the training time requirements for specific health fund eligibility.

Monthly intakes
Intakes commence monthly, allowing you to begin your journey without waiting for a semester to begin.

E-Classroom (Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast)
Classroom sessions and Clinical hours are held weekly at the Q-Academy campus and are supervised by a trainer, giving you the opportunity to ask for support at any time whilst studying. Classroom learning requires students to be motivated and self-disciplined. You must be confident in your ability to maintain self-directed study and follow the schedule for the full 12 month duration of the course. Content is provided through a digital manual with pre-recorded 5–10 minute videos of techniques, that you can revisit in class or at home as often as needed. In the classroom, you will also have the chance to practise techniques on other students under the supervision of a qualified trainer.

Online (Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Sydney)
The self-directed online program allows you to follow your own study plan and complete lessons at your own pace from anywhere in the world each week, making it easy to study if away. You can access your online lessons and assessments as often as needed, 24/7, via our student portal. Lesson content is provided through a digital manual with engaging pre-recorded 5-10 minute training videos to demonstrate all the techniques. Our online support team will guide and support you with after hours support including one on one booked video sessions and email support ensuring effective assistance is available within 24 hours. On-site attendance will only be required for your clinical hours. You must be confident in your ability to maintain self-directed study and follow the schedule for the full 12 month duration of the course.
You are required to have access to a massage table and willing volunteers to practise on while completing your online assessments. Please note that required clinic hours are additional to these practice and assessment requirements.

Clinic hours
A total of 200 hours of clinical practice is required to successfully complete this diploma.

E-Classroom delivery must complete clinic hours on a weekly basis.

Online clinical practice can be completed in one of the following modes:

Weekly clinic mode: 1 day per week (6 hours per day) for approximately 40 weeks at an approved Q Academy Student Clinic (subject to availability).

or

Block clinic mode: 2 weeks per term across all 4 terms at an approved Q Academy Student Clinic (subject to availability).

Flexibility
You have the flexibility to change from online study to classroom delivery (or vice versa) at any time, subject to classroom availability. You may also request to change clinic locations, depending on clinic capacity.
In addition, you can apply for an extension of up to six months to complete the course if additional time is needed.

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
