Course overview

Develop your career in marine craft construction with this intermediate-level course. You will learn a broad range of practical skills and technical knowledge across a variety of vessels, enabling you to work as a boat builder and repairer.

The industry relies on skilled workers to meet high-quality manufacturing standards and is prepared to invest in its workers to develop the skills required.

This course provides the skills required to perform a range of marine craft construction tasks. You will learn about occupational health and safety, trade drawing and lofting, material science, composite, and timber construction. You will also study the repair and maintenance procedures associated with various construction methods. You will receive hands-on training delivered by our industry-experienced teachers in workshops equipped with the latest in marine technology.

Upon completion of this course you will be qualified to produce templates and patterns from full size detail drawings, conduct fit-outs and carry out repairs to wooden, fibreglass and composite marine craft. If completed as part of an apprenticeship this course will also allow you to apply for a trade qualification.


The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete all core units listed below, plus a combination of elective units with a total value of at least 73 points. Please note, elective units have various points values. Elective units will be selected in consultation with your employer and included on your training plan.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Domestic Students
There are no Selection criteria requirements for Domestic Students.

International Students
The following Selection criteria requirements apply only to International Students:

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 5.5 (no individual band less than 5.0) or ISLPR 2+ on all skills or other - View a list of all English Language tests accepted by TAFE Queensland International
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 10 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. View the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Students should be a minimum of 18 years of age. Student visa applicants under the age of 18 will be accepted where they demonstrate that they will be accompanied by a parent, legal custodian or a suitable relative who is aged 21 or over. This arrangement requires the approval of the Department of Home Affairs.  For more information visit Department of Home Affairs - Welfare Requirements for Student Visa Applicants under 18.

To study an apprenticeship or traineeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice or trainee with your employer.
Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.


International students
You will also be required to undertake 480 hours of vocational placement in an approved setting. TAFE Queensland will coordinate and source this for you.

The vocational placement component of the qualification will be offered at small, medium and large organisations on the Gold Coast.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of safety glasses, protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210, leather gloves to AS2161, and hair protection. You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing.

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Need to know

Replacement Qualification
This qualification has been replaced by MEM30719 - Certificate III in Marine Craft Construction, as of 25 June 2019. Please note: TAFE Queensland has been given approval to extend the transition period until 31 December 2020, to enable current students to complete their study. If required, current enrolment will be transitioned into the replacement qualification.
