Course overview

Develop the essential, entry-level skills you need to work as a farm labourer. This skill set will prepare you to get started in the agriculture, horticulture or land management industries.

In this introductory course you'll learn how to safely handle, transport and store chemicals; prepare and apply chemicals for the control of pests, weeds and diseases; coordinate control measures for plant pests, diseases and disorders; and plan and coordinate weed control activities while minimising environmental damage. You'll also discover how to safely operate a range of agricultural machinery and equipment including tractors in accordance with relevant legislative requirements. 

Successful completion of this skill set will prepare you to seek work as a farm labourer in a range of agricultural settings.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

The cost of this skill set is covered by the Queensland Government. However, eligibility criteria applies. For you to be eligible, you need to be:

  • a Queensland resident; aged 15 years or over who is no longer at school; is an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, and
  • a job seeker, and can provide evidence of access or intent to access the Australian Government’s JobSeeker payment, or a copy of an Australian Government-issued concession card or evidence that I have applied for an Australian Government-issued concession card or
  • a worker who has been negatively impacted by COVID-19, experiencing circumstances such as one or more of, but not limited to the following; displacement, loss of income, reduced hours of employment, stand-down or other such circumstance, and if asked, could provide evidence of this.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. 

Suitable attire will also be required for attendance at residential schools; a long sleeved shirt, long pants, steel capped boots, safety glasses, a sun safe hat, and sunscreen.

Need to know

You can only apply for one skill set at a time. Once you have completed you can apply for another. 

The program is delivered across 3 weeks, with week 1 and 2 delivered online, covering the theory components of the 6 units.  The first two weeks will be structured as follows:

  • Structured, teacher directed, Zoom lessons (online) each of 60 minutes in duration. There will be approximately 6-9 workshops per week.
  • Once your enrolment is finalised you will receive an invitation to your online Zoom lessons.

*Note: days will be altered as required to cater for Public Holidays

  • Teacher directed, unsupervised online learning for you to complete course materials (in between designated Zoom sessions)
  • Independent study and completion of assessment tasks on Wednesdays and Fridays
  • You are able to contact your teacher for additional support via email at any time throughout the online week.

Residential blocks
Residential School locations will be available across a number of TAFE Queensland locations. 

Once you have completed the enrolment process, a representative from the TAFE Queensland Rural team will contact you directly to secure your place in the Residential School Training. If your preferred Residential School location is not available until a later month in the year, you will be enrolled in the month that includes your preferred location (please see more details below). This is to ensure you complete your Theory Based Training and Residential School training in the same month.

You will be required to organise your own travel and accommodation to and from the Residential School training and will responsible for associated costs. 

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
