Application FAQs

Want to apply for a course with TAFE Queensland?

We’ve put together some frequently asked questions to help you quickly find the information you need. If your question isn’t answered here and you can’t find it on our website, please get in touch with our team below.

The easiest way to apply for your preferred course is to click 'Apply now' from the relevant course page (see the Diploma of Nursing HLT54121 example below). You'll then be guided on how to submit your application.

Once you've submitted your application, it will be assessed by our team to confirm you meet the entry requirements, and to assess your eligibility for any available funding. During busy periods, this can take between 4-6 weeks, so we recommend applying early to ensure a smooth start to your studies.

Refer to the How to apply page for more information about applying for apprenticeships and traineeships, degrees through QTAC, TAFE at School courses, or as an international student. You can also watch our video for a step-by-step guide.

The Fee-Free TAFE course list is chosen based on local skills demand and advice from industry. Funded places are limited and subject to change. You can find current eligible Fee-Free TAFE courses here.

If your preferred course isn't available for Fee-Free TAFE funding, there may be other funding and subsidies available. Find out more.

How you pay for your course can vary, depending on your study mode (e.g. online part-time) and any subsidies or financial support you're eligible to receive. Here's what you need to know:

  • Full payment of tuition fees and applicable charges is due 30 days prior to your course starting (or immediately if you enrol within the month of your start day).
  • If you're unable to pay upfront, you can organise an alternative payment method at the application stage. For example, you may be able to request a payment plan, defer to a student loan, or request sponsorship where your employer/job agency covers tuition fees.
  • Our customer service team can help you explore a range of payment options, subsidies, loans and scholarships you may be eligible for to assist you with the cost of your studies. Explore your options or chat with our team.

While we're not able to offer all of our 400+ courses at every campus or for each intake, you can check out the 'Ways to study' section on your preferred course to see what is available. Toggle between different study options (e.g. on campus, online or TAFE at School) to view available campuses and upcoming intakes. Some study modes such as online self-directed and apprenticeship/traineeships can be started at anytime.

We're always adding new courses and intakes to our website, so if your preferred option isn't currently available, check back again soon. You can also submit an enquiry via the 'Ask a question' button on your preferred course and request to be contacted when further intakes are announced.

Check out the 'Workload' section under 'Ways to study' on your preferred course to get an idea of when your training will take place. While we try to provide as much detail as possible, individual course timetables often aren't able to be finalised until closer to the course start date.

If you need to know your timetable before applying, submit your details via the 'Ask a question' link on the course page and our team will let you know when the timetable is available.

Alternatively, online self-directed learning (if available) allows you to study at your own pace – without having to come to campus or attend scheduled online classes.

We get it – study can seem hard to fit in when your life is already packed with obligations like caring, employment or travel. To help you figure out which study option is best for your learning style and needs, check out our comparision table to find your fit.

Keep in mind that not every course is offered via each study mode, so check the relevant course page first to see which options are available.

That depends. Some of our online courses (including micro-credentials) are able to be started 'anytime'. Anytime courses commence shortly after enrolment or on the next available intake (your exact start date will be confirmed on enrolment). Other online courses have specific start dates, usually with a new intake commencing every 12 weeks.

Head to the relevant course page and look at the 'Start date' section under 'Ways to study'. Here you'll see whether your course starts 'anytime' or on a specific date.

If you're studying via online virtual classroom, or a combination of online and on-campus training, online classes will be held live at a scheduled time. Your teacher may choose to record the class, but it's not guaranteed. So, it's best to make sure you can commit to the scheduled class times before applying.

If you're not sure whether you'll be able to attend scheduled class times, it might be best to choose a course that's offered via an online self-directed study mode. These courses allow you to complete self-paced study and access all your course materials (including any videos/recordings) on demand.

It's not always possible to change your study mode or workload after you've started your studies, as your course might not have other delivery models available for your current intake. Get in touch with our customer service team and they'll be able to talk to you about your options.

Amazing! When completing your application, you'll find a section where you can upload your previous transcripts, so that your completed units can be assessed.

We'll let you know by email or text message how your application is tracking. So, keep an eye on your inbox (and junk folder!) to make sure you don't miss notifications or requests for additional information.
