Higher education surveys

Surveys are the central repository of data, dissemination and administration of information relating to the student experience and satisfaction across TAFE Queensland’s higher education courses.

Student evaluations

We use an inhouse survey tool for Student Evaluations of Teaching (SET). SET surveys are completed each semester for each degree. These surveys are undertaken towards the end of the semester and results are made available after the end of semester resulting has been finalised. The outcomes of these surveys help our educators in the ongoing design and approach to their unit teaching, learning, and assessment strategies.

Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching

Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) is a suite of national higher education surveys funded and endorsed by the Department of Education and TrainingQILT covers the student life cycle from the commencement of higher education study to employment after graduation. QILT is independently administered by The Social Research Centre who:

  • Undertake data collection of the QILT surveys
  • Report on the outcomes of each of these surveys
  • Support all higher education institutions in relation to QILT
  • Create, monitor and update the QILT website
  • Provide data to the higher education regulatory authority

QILT is comprised of four surveys.

  • The Student Experience Survey (SES)
  • The Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS)
  • The Employer Satisfaction Survey (ESS)
  • Graduate Outcomes Survey - Longitudinal (GOS-L)

The QILT surveys reflect the Australian Government's desire to have Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that will demonstrate students’ engagement with and experience of programs, and the quality of those programs from the students’ perspective.

The results from the surveys will be made public via the QILT website to help current and future students make informed decisions about their study options.

Student Experience Survey

The Student Experience Survey (SES) is an opportunity for current students to talk about their experience in TAFE Queensland’s higher education courses.

Our institutional results help both other providers and the government improve the student experience, including teaching, learning, student services, and support.

Your experiences in the following areas are surveyed;

  • Skills development
  • Learner engagement
  • Teaching quality
  • Student support
  • Learning resources

When you'll receive the survey

Invitations to complete the SES online are emailed by the Social Research Centre to all undergraduate or postgraduate coursework students. An early notification will be sent via the TAFE Queensland student management system letting you know that the survey is coming soon.

The Social Research Center will email you a link to the survey and the survey will be open for four weeks from the first week of August each year.

There is a prize draw incentive program to encourage early completion of the questionnaire. The Social Research Centre administer all aspects of the prize draw.

We encourage all students to participate. The survey provides you with the opportunity to talk about your experience, and all responses are confidential.

TAFE Queensland uses the results to make improvements to teaching, learning and assessment, as well as student services and support. It also gives us a valuable insight into the experiences of our students.  More information about the SES is available from the QILT SES website.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) is a national survey of students who have recently graduated.

The GOS will be sent to undergraduate and postgraduate onshore higher education graduates who have completed the requirements of a higher education accredited qualification.

The GOS will ask you about your study experience and the type of work or further study you are doing after graduating.

GOS responses are used to:

  • Improve TAFE Queensland courses
  • Inform higher education policy development

Responses are also reported by media and publishers, including the Good Universities Guide, where the rating you give your course will impact its reported overall quality.

When you'll receive the survey

Invitations to complete the GOS online are emailed by the Social Research Centre.

  • If you graduate in the first half of the year, you'll be emailed the following November.
  • If you graduate in the second half of the year, you'll be emailed the following May.

There is a prize draw incentive program to encourage early completion of the questionnaire. The Social Research Centre administers all aspects of the prize draw. Visit the GOS website for more information.

Employer Satisfaction Survey

The Employer Satisfaction Survey (ESS) is the first national survey that directly links the experience of graduates to the views of their direct supervisors. ESS collects the insights and perceptions of Australian employers to help monitor and better understand:

  • The specific skills and attributes needed in business
  • How well higher education is equipping graduates for the workforce

Collection of employer views of the technical skills, generic skills and work readiness of recent graduates provides assurance about the quality of Australia's higher education sector. Employers taking part in the ESS will benefit other employers through enhancements to Australian higher education policy and tertiary curricula.

Graduates are asked to nominate contact details of their work supervisor during the GOS collection. ESS is conducted immediately after the GOS.

More information is available from the QILT-ESS website.

Graduate Outcomes Survey-Longitudinal

The Graduate Outcomes Survey-Longtitudinal (GOS-L) follows up with graduates who have completed the initial GOS three years earlier, and indicated they are happy to be contacted in the future to complete the GOS-L. The GOS-L replaces the Beyond Graduate Survey (BGS) from 2016.

GOS -L focuses on measuring:

  • Labour force history
  • Further Study
  • Graduate attributes
  • Graduate preparation

GOS-L is administered in February each year. More information is available from the QILT_GOS-L website.
