TAFE Queensland has partnered with Townsville Flight Training and Townsville Helicopters to offer industry-standard aviation training in North Queensland. Learn more about our partners and find out what it's like to learn to fly in Townsville.
TAFE Queensland has joined forces with Aviation Australia to deliver a range of aviation and aerospace courses throughout Queensland. Leveraging both organisations' collective size and expertise the partnership aims to establish Queensland as a major aviation hub by delivering specialist aviation training and strong educational pathways and outcomes for students.
The highly-experienced staff at Townsville Flight Training have a wealth of knowledge and experience and provide a high level of support to students. Your training will be based at Townsville Airport where you will have access to all classes of airspace. As the school is located in an international airport you will also have exposure to flying in larger cities.
Townsville Helicopters Flight Training School is a CASA authorised pilot training facility and provides training for TAFE Queensland. The Flight Training School operates out of the city's main international airport. The school is the first civilian helicopter training facility in Townsville, with a focus on training students to a level that makes them superior to their peers.
Operating from an international airport allows the student to become familiar with this type of controlled airspace. Townsville Helicopters utilises an open area within the airport that often does not require a lot of radio calls, as well as uncontrolled airspace to the east and the west of the field. This allows uninterrupted training lessons and also immerses the student into the professionalism of flying in a larger city.
Brisbane students complete their training with Airwork Aviation at the Caboolture Airfield, just a 40 minute drive north of the Brisbane CBD and close to Archerfield, Sunshine Coast and Amberley airspace. The airfield is located outside of controlled airspace, allowing you to spend more time flying and less time waiting for air traffic control.
Located at the spectacular Sunshine Coast, Helitec offers students the opportunity to develop their skills and gain their qualification in an idyllic location that boasts excellent surfing beaches, sunny warm weather and a wide variety of accommodation. Based at the Sunshine Coast Airport, Helitec is able to provide its students with valuable flying experience in controlled airspace, with many uncontrolled airports located just a short distance away. Offering quality training by experts with over 25 years of experience in the industry and an exemplary safety record, Helitec’s training enables students to gain the skills they need to take to the skies while making the most of the Sunshine Coast’s relaxed lifestyle.
Now South Australians have the opportunity to achieve a nationally recognised TAFE Queensland qualification locally in Adelaide. Students will train at Aerostar Aviation’s base, located at Hangar 8 Parafield Airport, just half an hour north of Adelaide CBD. This is an ideal training location, as it allows pilots to fly in controlled airspace with student-friendly air traffic controllers.
