TAFE Queensland’s Tourism Career Launch initiative is empowering migrant and refugee students on the Gold Coast with the skills, confidence and industry connections needed to launch meaningful careers in the tourism and hospitality industries.

Monica Agoth is from South Sudan, having relocated to Australia as a refugee with her mother and seven brothers and sisters in August 2003. What followed was a very tough journey of education, working hard and career successes — with TAFE Queensland playing an integral role, every step of the way.

Yaping Hu knows what it feels like to be new – new to Australia, new to English, and new to the classroom. But through her journey with TAFE Queensland, she’s built something stronger than qualifications. She’s built confidence.

When 27-year-old Fidele Niyonzima arrived in Australia, he knew only a few English words and greetings. Today, he’s studying Allied Health at TAFE Queensland Townsville (Pimlico) campus, while also learning English through the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).

Growing up in the small village of Tell-Banat, Sinjar in Iraq, Qaharaman Khudhur spent countless hours in the kitchen with his mother. It was here he was taught his country’s traditional dishes – rich in spices and fragrance, and their secrets – experiences that would ‘serve’ to motivate him when he eventually left his home country.

Astri stepped into the TAFE Queensland classroom with one major goal: connecting with fellow migrants. Before she knew it, she had built a networking community from the ground up.

Escaping genocide in 2014, for Maysaa Shani Baqi the past 10 years have included both challenges and opportunities — from moving to Toowoomba and studying with the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) to employment with TAFE Queensland and now a new career focus.

After brushing up on her English skills at TAFE Queensland through the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), Candice is now working as a dental assistant with Queensland Health.
