Four reasons to study a certificate

If you need job-ready skills and basic knowledge, a certificate course at TAFE Queensland is perfect. We can help you get ready to seek employment in your chosen industry.

Skills and knowledge

According to the Australian Qualifications Framework certificate courses give students theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required for work and/or further learning.

Our translation? A certificate course gives you job-ready skills for entry-level positions. You also develop a range of 'soft skills' like problem solving. Certificates also help you get ready for further study.

So if you're looking to get into the workforce, the first step could be to study a certificate.

Employment

To study and complete a certificate may be a requirement for your job. For example, to become an early childhood education and care worker you will need a certificate III. To work as a personal trainer you need a certificate IV.

Make sure you find out what qualification you need. Try talking to people who work in the field or checking with relevant industry groups. The Australian Government also has a great resource called myskills. You can search by job to find recommended courses and pathways.

Certificates can also boost your employment opportunities. They can make you stand out above someone with fewer or no qualifications. They also show employers you are interested in and committed to their industry.

Pathways

Studying a certificate is also a great way to get ready for further study. You can often get credit from completed certificates towards a diploma. And a diploma can give you a pathway to university.

If you want to do an apprenticeship, completing a pre-vocational course is also a great option. Completing an apprenticeship is essential to become a qualified tradesperson.

Funding

At TAFE Queensland there are a range of concessions, loans, and scholarships you may be eligible for to assist you with the cost of your study.

Many certificate courses are eligible for subsidies. These include the Certificate 3 Guarantee and Free TAFE for Year 12 graduates.
