Why pre-apprenticeship grads make better apprentices

Ensuring an apprentice is in it for the long haul is one of the biggest unknowns when expanding your business. However hiring pre-apprenticeship grads ensures your new apprentice is workplace ready.

Hiring an apprentice is a great way to grow your business and contribute to the future growth of your industry. But the reality is it can also be time-consuming and risky when trying to ensure your investment pays off.

The most recent stats from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) showed that only 59.6 per cent of trainees and apprentices who took on vocational training in 2013 completed their qualification in 2017. The research showed that a stand out reason for apprenticeship non-completion was the apprentice realising the job wasn’t for them. So how do you ensure that your apprentice is in it for the long haul?

What is pre-apprenticeship training?

Pre-apprenticeship certifications are entry-level qualifications completed by students who aren't in a formal arrangement with an employer. The training is made up of traditional classroom learning on a TAFE campus as well as hands-on work experience out in the real world.

How do they benefit employers?

Students who have completed a pre-apprenticeship have already committed time, and sometimes money, to pursue a career path that interests them. They have already proven that they can follow through on projects and are engaged enough in the industry to want to take their training to the next level.

Pre-apprenticeship grads also come to the job with a higher level of theoretical and practical knowledge and have had some exposure to the industry through the work experience aspect of their qualification.

Do pre-apprenticeship qualifications exist in my industry?

At TAFE Queensland we have a range of pre-apprenticeship courses ranging from baking to construction and hair dressing to rail infrastructure. These certificates can also be undertaken during high school and can contribute to a student’s QCE points.
