A brave new world of micro-credentials

Micro-credentials are the new black and if you don’t have some, you need to get some. TAFE Queensland's short, highly targeted courses are designed to help you improve a specific skill, essentially making you an expert in that area.

With the rate of change in workplace around the world, both due to the COVID-19 pandemic and general technological advances, employers are after quick professional development and people are looking for the skills to give them a competitive edge.

As individuals we should also all be making sure we stay current in our profession, or seeking out new and exciting skills to pursue other opportunities. According to research from Deloitte, the half-life of learned skills is now around five years. Unlike traditional qualifications, micro-credentials provide ‘just-in-time’ training, allowing you to develop industry-relevant skills exactly when you need them.

About TAFE Queensland micro-credentials

We have a range of micro-credentials available. You’ll be able to gain knowledge in areas related to digital literacy, cyber security, data and more.

Our micro-credential courses will be a quick study, with the shortest being just one hour and the longest being delivered over a week. Some courses are online and accessible any time you like, while others may include visiting a campus (or other location) and one of our teachers will deliver the course face-to-face.

If you’re a small business owner during the COVID-19 pandemic these courses, and our financial resilience webinars, are going to be perfect for you. They won’t take you away from your clients or customers for too long.

Certificates and badges

Our micro-credentials are developed with industry in mind to meet specific needs, ensuring they will be recognised by current and future employers. You can also just do one (or more) for fun.

On completion of your course, you’ll be issued a certificate and digital ‘badge’, confirming you completed the course. You will be able to put your badge on your resume and social media profiles, like LinkedIn, so that employers understand the breadth and depth of your knowledge.

Costs and upcoming courses

TAFE Queensland is part of the Queensland Government’s micro-credential pilot—announced on 27 February 2020—by Minister for Training and Skills Development, Shannon Fentiman. The Queensland Government is subsidising the cost of micro-credentials under the pilot making them more affordable, and in some cases free, for participants.
