Construction and creative students compete in Lego build

TAFE Queensland creative and construction students went head-to-head in a live Lego build event under the guidance of superstars Andrew Tuppen and Damian Hinds, who found fame as the runner-up team on Channel Nine’s 2020 Lego Masters.

The event was held in the new $10.5 million trade training building at TAFE Queensland’s Ashmore campus — a purpose-built facility specifically designed for building and construction students.

Eight teams of up to five students used their creativity and design skills to create a 3D masterpiece, with each of the Lego builds depicting an aspect of the Gold Coast's landscape and cultural diversity.

Teams were assigned a pre-built Lego water dragon and were tasked with building the landscape and habitat for it to be placed in. The students’ creations included a desert, rain forest, volcano and waterfall.

The event was the last of six major Lego build events across the region in partnership with Study Gold Coast to showcase the city as a leading study destination.

A team of five school-based carpentry students won the event with their Lego creation representing the Gold Coast hinterland, complete with a waterfall crashing into a river as their dragon floated on a raft.

Winning group member, Gavin Cannarella said the group really enjoyed working as a team to bring their creation and ideas to life.

Meanwhile, carpentry student Wil Shannon said his groups Lego build not only included many elements of the environment but also articulated a story.

“We decided to tell a story and placed the dragon in a cave protecting a piece of gold with an army of men trying to defeat the fire-breathing dragon as they tried to reclaim the gold,” he said.

The Lego creations will be on show at iconic locations around the Gold Coast.
