Dominic's Inspiring Journey as an Indigenous Nurse

I feel proud telling potential employers that I trained with TAFE Queensland.

Meet Dominic Cloma, who took on the responsibility of caring for his siblings, grandparents, and anyone else who needed a helping hand. Dominic has always been fascinated by health and science, and after completing high school, he pursued a Science Degree at the University of Western Sydney.

For the next eight years, Dominic worked in pathology as a Cytology technician, screening samples for cancer. His focus was particularly on cervical cancer. But Dominic had a burning desire for change, and he yearned for a life closer to the beach. So, he made the bold decision to move to the Gold Coast, where he could live and work near the shimmering waves.

With his relocation, Dominic decided to embark on a new career path as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN). In 2012, he completed a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (HLT33115) and started working as a carer in aged care at Opal Aged Care and Care Star, providing compassionate care to the elderly.

As Dominic worked on the front lines of healthcare, his family, the nurses he worked alongside, and his patients all encouraged him to pursue higher qualifications in nursing. They saw his potential and the passion he had for caring for others. Encouraged by their support, Dominic completed a Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) in 2021 and is now on his way to obtaining a Bachelor Degree in Nursing. He dreams of becoming a Registered Nurse, and his aspirations don't stop there. Dominic envisions completing an Honours and Masters in Nursing, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Clinical Nurse.

Dominic's strong inclination towards caring and healthcare was deeply rooted in his heritage. He came from a family where his mother, aunties, and other relatives, both biological and through his Aboriginal lineage, were dedicated carers and nurses. He witnessed firsthand their acts of kindness, providing shelter and aid to those in need. These experiences left an indelible mark on Dominic, emphasising the significance of practical support in times of need.

Being culturally and linguistically diverse, identifying with the LGBTIQ+ community and retraining as a mature-age student, means Dominic is a strong role model for young people in the Aboriginal community who look to him as inspiration to follow your dreams.

Dominic is also socially connected with Indigenous community organisations providing informal health support and direction, and a volunteer run community garden group which saves and shares seed and grows plants, fruits and vegetables for charity groups.

With his long-term ambition, Dominic aims to bridge the gap in medical care in rural areas by becoming a Nurse Practitioner. He hopes to bring quality healthcare to vulnerable and underserved communities, especially those in rural regions. Dominic believes that everyone deserves access to healthcare, regardless of their location or background.

“There is lots to learn, and you have your ups and downs, but learning is not meant to be a smooth road and your teachers are there to support you all the way,” Dominic said.

His journey hasn't been without challenges, but Dominic has always approached them with a positive mindset and a willingness to learn. Balancing work, study, and financial responsibilities as a mature-age learner has tested his dedication and perseverance. Dominic's determination and hard work have allowed him to successfully complete his training and excel in his chosen field.

Recognising Dominic's leadership potential and dedication, he was awarded an Indigenous Pathways Scholarship, which further motivated him to pursue his dreams. Dominic is proud to have trained with TAFE Queensland, a renowned institution in the healthcare industry.

“I feel proud telling potential employers that I trained with TAFE Queensland. The training is highly regarded in the healthcare industry,” he said.

As Dominic continues his journey towards becoming a Registered Nurse and eventually a Nurse Practitioner, he remains committed to making a difference in the lives of those.
