Joshua ups his game with TAFE Queensland

With an overwhelming workload, a lack of direction and limited support available, university study didn't gel with Joshua Goodsall's learning style, and he needed a change.

Knowing he needed a more fulfilling course, Joshua's mum emailed him about the Brisbane Broncos Sport Business Institute, bringing him to TAFE Queensland.

"My mum is a massive Broncos fan, and when she got an email from them about this program, she sent it to me. When I clicked the link and looked through the website, I was instantly keen to apply."

After enrolling with the Brisbane Broncos Sport Business Institute to study both the Diploma of Sport and Diploma of Leadership and Management (SIS50321/BSB50420), Joshua has found the learning environment he sought.

Located at the club’s Red Hill headquarters, he's learning from industry experts and Broncos staff who provide him with invaluable professional insights and experience.

"There's nothing better than coming to the world-class facility each week and learning environment in this environment. I'm thriving being around and connecting with like-minded people."

Having worked in hospitality and managed people, Joshua finds the course content insightful and complementary to what he has learned in previous roles.

"Throughout our leadership and management training, we've learned about emotional intelligence, self-control and various people management skills."

"We're learning how to work within teams and manage projects, and it's perfect because it gets overwhelming when working with multiple people who sometimes don't agree."

"So, we've been learning strategies, frameworks and techniques to overcome those challenges constructively. I now reflect on my previous roles and know how I could have done better if I had the tools and strategies I've learned here."

With the course content, teachers and classmates all creating a harmonious learning environment, Joshua is thriving and developing the professional skills he wants to work in an industry he's passionate about.

"Because we're based at Broncos headquarters, we're inside a professional sports environment. We get visited by industry leaders from across the business who give us insights and practical examples of what they do in the sporting context."

"I've grown during this course, personally and professionally, and I'm a lot more confident when interacting with people in the workplace."

With the course requiring Joshua to complete 100 hours of work-integrated learning, he's working towards this goal within the club's community engagement team.

"I helped the game day team set up Fan Zone areas to hand out fan cards, and seeing people's smiles and excitement about the game while knowing there's much more to it than meets the eye."

"Thanks to this course, I have a deeper understanding, and it's about connecting fans to the club, which is great. There's nothing better than putting smiles on people's faces - it's what I'm passionate about," he said.

Joshua is thrilled that he changed from university to the Brisbane Broncos Sport Business Institute to study under the guidance of TAFE Queensland's teachers, as the environment better suits his learning style.

"The thing I love about TAFE over university is that it's a lot more practical, and that's helped me onboard the information, and the knowledge is sticking."

"Another great thing is the good mix of students from various backgrounds helps make the class enjoyable. We're all growing and learning together, and you can see people becoming more professional quickly. It's a great collaborative culture and a fantastic course," concluded Joshua.
