Keira leads TAFE Queensland's new beauty path

Keira Coakley, 17, is making history as the first beauty apprentice to graduate from TAFE Queensland’s Cairns campus.

Set to complete a Diploma of Beauty Therapy (Spa Treatments) (SHB50121-SPA) through an apprenticeship with Cairns Clear Skin this week, Keira Coakley is not only reaching a milestone, but also paving the way for future apprentices in the beauty industry in Cairns.

“From a young age, I knew school wasn’t for me. I was yearning to do something more creative, and high school wasn’t really sparking that for me. So, the minute I could, I left school and started my trade,” Keira said. Her journey began with a Certificate III in Beauty Services (SHB30121), which accelerated her pathway into the diploma program.

“Every day in the clinic brings a new challenge, and that’s what makes my job interesting. The beauty industry is so diverse; you never stop learning,” Keira said. “Training with TAFE Queensland has been great. The teachers do a really good job at making us all feel comfortable. It was intense, but nothing like school; it was so much fun.”

Cairns Clear Skin owner, Liz Franz, reflected on Keira’s journey. “Keira first came to us as a young 16-year-old. We nurtured her straight away,” Ms Franz said. “She grew very quickly as a part of our team. It's been a wonderful experience.”

“The hands-on experience at Cairns Clear Skin has been invaluable,” Keira noted. “It’s not just about beauty—it’s about connecting with people, understanding their needs, and helping them feel their best.”

TAFE Queensland Cairns campus hair and beauty teacher, Lisa Bayliss, expressed her pride in Keira’s achievements. “Seeing Keira grow and develop her skills has been a real joy,” Ms Bayliss said. “Working with Liz and the team at Cairns Clear Skin has been incredible; they’ve been so flexible with Keira, allowing her skills to flourish.”

“Apprenticeships like this ensure students receive a holistic education, tailored to the strengths of the business, while we at TAFE Queensland fill any training gaps.”

“We work closely with employers to ensure our training programs are perfectly suited to meet the needs of both the students and the employer. Keira’s success is a testament to how effective this approach can be,” Ms Bayliss added.

Ms Franz also highlighted the benefits of taking on apprentices. “You can get someone trained the way you want them trained. Keira has been dynamic, quickly picking up both administrative tasks and treatments because she's so keen to learn.”

As Keira looks forward to the next step in her career, she remains committed to expanding her knowledge and skills in the industry. “I want to stay ahead of the trends and bring new solutions to my clients,” she said.

“One thing I’ve learned during my apprenticeship is how important it is to be adaptable. In beauty therapy, you need to be ready to meet the evolving needs of your clients and the industry.”

“Finishing my apprenticeship feels like the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. I’m grateful for the foundation I’ve built here and excited about the opportunities to come,” Keira concluded.
