Mark turns a new page in his career
Mark Huba has successfully turned a passion for learning into a career helping others do the same after completing a Diploma of Library and Information Services (BSB50520) online with TAFE Queensland.
Diploma of Library and Information Services (BSB50520) graduate Mark Huba has been recognised for his achievements during his studies by the Australian Library and Information Association, receiving the title of 2023 Student of the Year after he was nominated by his teachers for his hard work and commitment.
Mark said he was honoured by the acknowledgment, with the award reaffirming his decision to change career paths.
“It came as a bit of a surprise, but a welcome one nonetheless,” Mark said.
“My teachers acknowledging my work, perseverance and commitment to my studies meant a great deal to me.”
The former primary school education support officer’s love for libraries developed early on in life, with his local public library playing an important part in his childhood. So when he began considering his next step in his career, library and information services seemed like a perfect opportunity to combine this passion with his desire to help others learn.
“I have lived on a farm for my entire life on the outskirts of Melbourne, and my public library and academic libraries were key to my intellectual development,” Mark said.
“Then during the pandemic I began to reflect on the direction of my life and career. I initially started a Certificate III in Library and Information Services (BSB30420), but my teacher was very supportive and it was their encouragement that guided me towards pursuing the diploma (BSB50520),” he said.
“My goal is not so much specifically career orientated as it is more about personal satisfaction. For me, that would entail finding a role or position in which I can be creative, constantly learn new skills, and make a positive difference in other people’s lives.”
Mark enrolled to study online via TAFE Queensland in 2021, stating that this enabled him to work his study around his life and work commitments.
“TAFE Queensland’s online study option was very user friendly, allowing you to study wherever and whenever you need or have the time available. I also really appreciated the way in which I could read course materials across any device, whether I was sitting at a computer or viewing it on my phone,” he said.
“Even though you might not meet other students in person, there were many options for communicating with fellow students, so I never really felt alone. And the teachers throughout my studies we're always extremely supportive, offering constructive feedback based on their extensive insights into the library sector.”
Mark graduated at the end of 2023 and is now putting his skills to use as a client service officer at a local university library. And while his study journey is complete, he remains grateful for his experience.
“I just really want to help people every day to find the information they need; there is great satisfaction in connecting someone with the information or services they require,” he said.
“I valued my time studying online with TAFE Queensland, and would recommend it to anyone, regardless of where in Australia you are choosing to study.”
