Embracing new challenges

After two decades out of school, Divina Irvin is hitting the books again and gaining newfound confidence through her studies.

Divina, a busy mum-of-three originally from the Philippines, said the time was right for her to step outside her comfort zone and gain new skills by studying a Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420).

"I have been busy caring for my children, but now that they are getting older, I decided it's time for me to start looking for a job managing administration."

Initially Divina felt apprehensive about returning to study after more than two decades away from an educational environment, and she was also worried about potential criticism of her accent.

However, once Divina began her course those fears quickly faded away.

"I'm always scared of my accent and that people don't understand me. I was so nervous but my teacher said, ‘don't be nervous, we’re all equal, you can do it’ and I am doing it!"

Divina chose to learn online so she could balance her studies with her busy schedule.

"Studying online offers me flexibility and convenience, allowing me to study anywhere at my own pace, and I have the opportunity to develop self-discipline and time-management skills."

"I have three kids and I need to take them to their sports and school, and online study is easy for me to access because after I do the household chores and mum duties, then I'll do my study."

Jobs and Skills Australia forecasts that manager-level positions are projected to grow by 8.1 per cent by 2028.

Divina said her course is providing her with the skills she needs to get a job.

"I have been learning about project management, studying budgets, costs, risks, safety, and how to deal with stakeholders and customers."

"I'm also learning about important company and industry policies and plans surrounding communication, diversity, recruitment, codes of conduct, finance, operations and strategies, as well as how to write a meeting plan."

Divina said being able to access free training through Fee-Free TAFE was a bonus.

"Because I don't need to pay, it really benefits our family. The money I was supposed to spend on my course, I can spend it on my kids instead."

"Free training provides an invaluable opportunity to enhance my knowledge and skills without financial difficulties, promoting equal access to a quality education and fostering a more skilled and educated workforce."
