From ‘on the bike’ to ‘on the tools’

“I originally started my career journey as a trainee librarian, but quickly learnt I didn’t like working behind a desk,” shared Nathan.

“So, I then went on to become a postie, moved later into retail, and then started in an electrical company as a storeman – which is where I really found my feet, and I then moved into this apprenticeship after that,” he said.

Nathan is employed by AMG Electrical Solutions in the South Burnett, and attends the Kingaroy campus during two-week training blocks throughout the year, with the remainder of his training ‘on-the-tools’ with his employer.

It was while working at AMG Electircal Solutions that Nathan discovered his passion for electrotechnology, and now, Nathan’s workdays are diverse and challenging.

“The day-to-day of my job is ever changing but of late I have been working on a heavy industry power station site, upgrading hazardous area lighting and power, and building a cable ladder tray to run new mains’ cables. I have also done plenty of time working on domestic and solar installations.”

“Every day is a lottery. They say ‘a change is as good as a holiday’ and every day can be different,” Nathan shared.

“I always wanted to be a tradie, but I just didn't know what I wanted to do specifically, and it took me a while to figure it out,” Nathan continued.

The father of three kids (and a dog) is focused on completing his three-year apprenticeship, eventually working as a qualified electrician, and with the later goal of running his own business.

Nathan speaks highly of the comprehensive training at TAFE Queensland, which covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of electrotechnology during the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820) course.

“I've learned stacks. More than I can put into words because there's so much involved in the theoretical side of electricity, then also the practical side. I’ve gotten a lot better with my hands too,” said Nathan. 

“The thing I've enjoyed the most about studying (to be an electrician) is the variety of work. Everything from domestic through to industrial and heavy industry,” Nathan said.

“Domestic and industrial are very different but studying to be an electrician gives you the opportunities to do both, but most people specialise in one or the other. For now, I like mixing it up a bit – it’s good."

“We cover everything from air conditioning, solar, general power points and lighting all the way through to power stations, and working there,” he said.

“In fact, I recently studied a transformer unit, which I was able to see in action at the power station I am currently working at.” 

The supportive training environment at TAFE Queensland has been a significant factor in Nathan’s learning experience. 

“The teachers at TAFE Queensland have been amazing – they answer every question in class – and I'm always the pest who asks all the questions. The facilities are pretty good too,” Nathan offered.

To end, Nathan believes “greatness is excelling where it’s not expected”, and provided the following words of wisdom to others like him, considering a career in electrotechnology .

“Study ahead. Learning about your trade before you get too involved in it is good. That way you know what's coming, and you can plan ahead – there’s a lot to get your head around. Also - wear your PPE,” Nathan finished.
