Honouring tomorrow's trade leaders

Newly qualified marine mechanic Mason Gatto, 21, took out top honours at the TAFE Queensland 2024 Townsville Trade Excellence Awards on Thursday, 18 July 2024.

Around 1,600 apprentices and trainees train with TAFE Queensland in Townsville, and Mason Gatto emerged victorious, claiming the trophies for Light Automotive Apprentice of the Year and the night’s top prize, Outstanding Apprentice of the Year at the TAFE Queensland 2024 Townsville Trade Excellence Awards.

Mason's dedication began in high school, where he consistently worked after school and on Saturdays to learn about marine mechanics. He has excelled in maintaining and repairing marine vessels, diagnosing mechanical problems with impressive expertise.

Mason is currently completing his Certificate III in Marine Mechanical Technology (AUR30520) at no cost, thanks to the Queensland Government’s Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s funding program.

“This award is an extra boost to keep pushing forward, and doing what I love,” Mr Gatto said. “I never thought I I’d get this far at the start of my apprenticeship.”

More than 220 people attended the Townsville Trade Excellence Awards at the TAFE Queensland Pimlico campus to celebrate the next generation of trades professionals.

TAFE Queensland Director of Educational Delivery for Trades and Transport Maree Butler said over 80 nominations were received and the judges shortlisted 45 finalists.

“I would like to congratulate all the finalists and winners, especially Mason Gatto for winning the major title of Outstanding Apprentice of the Year,” Ms Butler said. “Mason has demonstrated exceptional dedication and enthusiasm throughout his apprenticeship at Reef Side Marine.”

“Starting as a school-based apprentice, Mason showed an impressive commitment by working after school and on Saturdays. His strong work ethic, leadership skills, and proactive approach to learning have truly set him apart.”

Ms Butler also commended Michael Mitchell from Townsville City Council, who won the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Trade Student of the Year Award. “Michael exemplifies the spirit of dedication and community engagement in his Electrical and Instrumentation Apprenticeship. His positive influence and commitment to mentorship have made him a role model for aspiring trades professionals,” she said.

She also applauded Shontel Bickerstaff from R.G.M. Maintenance Pty Ltd, winner of the Female Trade Student of the Year Award. “As the first female apprentice at RGM in Townsville, Shontel has broken barriers and paved the way for more women to join this traditionally male-dominated industry. Thanks to her exemplary performance, RGM now proudly employs several other female apprentices.”

The 2024 Townsville Trade Excellence Awards would not be possible without the generous support of main event sponsor Blackwoods and award sponsors ACD Trade, Bidfood, BOC Ltd, Carmichael Ford, Dateline Imports, Global Welding, Haz-Elec, Makita, Reward Hospitality, Samios Plumbing Suppliers, Totally Workwear, and Townsville Hardware.
