Staying local and working global – a solid partnership, big career

For Brendan Bartz, the spark for engineering began long before he stepped into a workshop. Growing up in Clifton, he spent countless hours alongside his dad in the shed, tinkering with tools, building things from scratch, and fuelling a passion that would eventually shape his future …

Now based in Toowoomba, Brendan is halfway through his Certificate IV in Engineering (MEM40119) with TAFE Queensland, while working as a boilermaker in advanced manufacturing with Russell Mineral Equipment (RME) – a global leader in the design and manufacture of specialised mining equipment, and an employer of choice.

Brendan found the perfect balance between gaining world-class skills and staying close to the comforts of home. As the first in his family to study at TAFE Queensland, he says the decision was easy.

“I chose to study at TAFE Queensland because I’d heard the horror stories of all the other RTOs, and it was a no-brainer,” he said.

Through a training model that blends block training at TAFE Queensland every six months, with hands-on experience at RME, Brendan is gaining the skills and knowledge he needs without leaving his boilermaking job or having to travel.

“Working at RME, I’m getting trained in world-class skills without having to leave the region, my friends or family,” Brendan shared.

With access to industry-leading facilities and the support of passionate teachers, Brendan finds learning at TAFE Queensland both rewarding and enjoyable.

He began his training journey with TAFE Queensland as a Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (MEM31922) apprentice, following employment by RME as a trades assistant.

“All of the teachers at TAFE Queensland have inspired me,” he said.

“They have a vast array of knowledge and experience throughout the industry – even though we’re all in the same industry, it (manufacturing) really is different everywhere you go.

“The teaching staff have supported me by giving as much guidance as I need.

“Whenever they’re asked a question, they’re always there and willing to help – there’s nothing they’ve not been able to answer,” he shared.

At RME Brendan says everything needed to succeed is at hand.

“They supply exactly what’s required to complete our work – from cranes to power tools to forklifts – there’s nothing we don’t have,” Brendan said.

A typical day for Brendan involves bringing precision and focus to every task.

“In manufacturing I’m coming to work, checking to make sure that parts are right and functioning, drilling and tapping holes, cleaning up anything that needs to be done, and then completing fabrication to the provided drawings,” Brendan explained.

Brendan isn’t just focused on today. His career ambitions extend far beyond graduation.

“I hope to progress at RME through a number of tickets and then potentially go for my welding supervisor’s course,” he said.

“My dream job down the track would be to eventually become a teacher, to give back to the future generations of the trade,” shared Brendan.

“My advice to others looking to pursue advanced manufacturing through TAFE Queensland would be just do it – you won’t regret it,” Brendan said.

“The best part is connecting with everybody in the region who’s in the same industry.

“The teachers have a wealth of knowledge and experience – it just makes studying at TAFE Queensland the best,” he finished.
