Beau learns to bring animation to life

Beau Johnstone’s journey with TAFE Queensland has been inspiring.

As he walked the stage before his peers to accept a well-earned Diploma of Screen and Media (Animation, Gaming, and Visual Effects) (CUA51020) qualification, he reflected on the experiences that shaped his time at TAFE Queensland and the invaluable lessons he learned.

"TAFE has been an exciting journey, and 2024 will be a valued experience for me," said Beau.

"The daily to weekly challenges imparted before us as students are balanced with second-to-none guidance, patience, and wisdom from our teachers.”

“Studying with TAFE Queensland gave me a sense of belonging, inclusion, and relevance. It has made us feel heard, the learning experience enjoyable, and I will truly miss the culture here."

Beau acknowledged that the defining element of his experience was the encouragement he received from his friends, family, teachers, and classmates, and he’s grateful for their support and inspiration.

This diploma equipped him with the specialised skills needed to launch a career in screen and media, with a focus on animation, gaming, and visual effects.

Designed for creative individuals, Beau thrived in the hands-on learning environment as he took on game design, development, and programming, preparing him to enter the industry.

Through combining technical and theoretical training, Beau expanded his artistic and digital skills while working in a simulated studio environment.

With access to industry-standard equipment and guidance from leading educators, Beau developed his expertise in 3D modelling, game art, and programming, gaining valuable experience in collaborative game development.

While there were challenges along the way, they were always met with expert guidance, patience, and wisdom from his teachers, creating an environment where he felt heard, valued, and included.

For Beau, the friendships he built during his studies were among the most meaningful aspects of his experience.

Collaborating on projects and exchanging ideas with his peers deepened his technical expertise and fuelled his natural curiosity and passion for teamwork.

"The environment within the classroom has given opportunities to create genuine relationships from both the staff and students.”

“Working together on our projects was the most memorable time for me. I enjoyed helping each other and learning new things every day,” he explained.

Beau also praised TAFE Queensland’s unique ability to balance hard and soft skills, emphasising how crucial these elements were to his personal and professional growth.

While technical skills are essential, he found that applying his skills in a real-world environment was just as crucial for long-term success.

Looking ahead, Beau is eager to continue honing his skills, connecting with industry leaders, and contributing to collaborative projects.

He also plans to attend future showcases and stay engaged with the institution and the next wave of talented graduates.

TAFE Queensland has equipped Beau with the tools, confidence, and community to embark on an exciting future in animation, gaming, and visual effects.

"Graduating is an achievement I share with my teachers, classmates, family and friends, and it will serve as a cherished moment. My qualification will forever remind me of the people I worked and studied alongside every time I look at it," concluded Beau.
