Brave mum rebuilds her life
Just weeks after fleeing war-torn Ukraine, Alona Sirant found herself in a TAFE Queensland classroom at the Robina campus on the Gold Coast.
Alona had already lived a full professional life. Back in Ukraine, she worked as a lawyer for 15 years and later as a child psychologist. But when war broke out, she was forced to leave everything behind and start over in Australia with her husband and young son.
“I had to rebuild my life from zero,” Alona said.
“I knew I wanted to work with children again, but first I needed to understand Australian culture and improve my English.”
The 42-year-old began volunteering at a local school. As her confidence grew and English progressed, she enrolled in TAFE Queensland’s Certificate III in School Based Education Support (CHC30221) - a decision she says changed her life.
“The course helped me understand how schools work here and gave me the tools to make a real difference,” she said.
Alona’s enthusiasm and dedication quickly paid off. After completing her first placement at Southport State High School, she was offered a job as a teacher aide.
“Working with high school students is like a never-ending adventure, full of surprises, challenges, and joy. The best part? Seeing their progress and hearing positive feedback from the teachers.”
Juggling work and study before even finishing her course wasn’t easy, but Alona said the support from her TAFE Queensland teachers made all the difference.
“My teachers Jenna and Emma believed in me. From day one, they were kind, patient, and understanding. They weren’t just teachers, they became like family,” she said.
Now permanently employed and thriving in her new role, Alona is an example of resilience and reinvention.
“TAFE Queensland gave me a start, not just in a new career, but in a new life."
"I've found my place, and I feel proud to help shape the future of young Australians,” said Alona.
