TAFE Queensland builds digital pathways for First Nations cohort in Cloncurry

As Australia celebrates NAIDOC Week this July 6 – 13, TAFE Queensland proudly recognises the resilience, aspirations and achievements of First Nations learners across the state.

In April, TAFE Queensland opened doors to a new training site in Cloncurry, where locals can now access free employability skills training under the government-funded Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program.

The site launched with a two-week ‘Kickstarter Course’, engaging a cohort of First Nations participants in a customised digital skills and work readiness program.

At the helm, educator Janus Gronvald (who previously delivered a nationally acclaimed digital skills bootcamp on Palm Island) supported students in building confidence and capability from the ground up.

“There is no judgement in my class,” Janus said. “I tell my students my story about how I came to Australia and what I overcame to be standing in front of them today. English is not my first language. I had to work hard, and if they are willing to work hard, they can accomplish anything.”

The course covered essential employment topics such as resume writing, workplace expectations, and communication styles, as well as using critical work software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.

The Cloncurry cohort demonstrated remarkable progress over the two weeks, gaining not only technical skills but also a deeper understanding of workplace culture and communication.

TAFE Queensland is proud to support First Nations communities through inclusive and practical training programs that foster empowerment and opportunity.

The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
