Chef Shayne cooks up success with his students

At TAFE Queensland, Shayne Vaughan is more than a cookery and hospitality educator. With nearly a decade of teaching experience under his belt and two decades of industry experience, Shayne’s career is a perfect blend of culinary expertise, education, and a deep commitment to helping students change their lives.

Now based at the Ipswich campus, Shayne has taught at other of TAFE Queensland’s 60 campuses, and chose a career with the organisation not only due to its reputation as the largest and most experienced training provider in the state, but to return to where his career in hospitality began in the mid-90s as a student.

“I started my journey in the industry with an apprenticeship at the Brisbane Hilton before heading overseas, and then returned to TAFE Queensland as an educator,” said Shayne.

“I teach a range of courses including Certificate II in Cookery (SIT20421) and Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (SIT30821), as well as Certificate I in Hospitality (SIT10222) through partnership programs.”

One notable partnership initiative Shayne is involved in is a hospitality training program with the Wounded Heroes Australia organisation. Wounded Heroes provides support to veterans and current members of the Australian Defence Force.

“This program is designed for participants experiencing disadvantaged or long-term unemployment and provides them with an opportunity to reskill. These participants are employed and paid as hospitality trainees for 20 weeks to equip them with industry skills and knowledge,” Shayne explained.

Shayne also helps mentor participants in an Ipswich Community Youth Services (ICYS) program which sees them undertaking training at the Ipswich campus.

“ICYS has been making a positive impact for many years locally and I joined the team a year ago and have partnered with my colleague, Chef Sarah, who has been leading this program for many years. Starting next semester, I'll be co-teaching with Sarah every Thursday, and I'm really excited about this opportunity,” said Shayne.

“One day a week, we'll be providing live services at TAFE Queensland’s Miner’s Right restaurant, but more importantly, we're equipping people with life-changing skills. We're giving them the confidence and empowerment they need to become job-ready and gain skills which can help them earn an income.”

While also making an impact on his students’ lives, Shayne believes that teaching at TAFE Queensland offers an incredible opportunity to work together in a team while growing personally and professionally.

“The culture here at TAFE Queensland is one which supports. It's inclusive. The culture here is also one of innovation. I think we challenge each other to up our game and there is a culture of continual improvement.”

“Plus, one of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing students' successful transition into apprenticeships and full-time employment.”

Vaughan’s advice for new recruits is simple: "Be humble, flexible, ask questions, and take notes,” said Vaughan.
