Delia shapes futures in beauty
Delia Negrillo is a TAFE Queensland Nail Technology and Beauty Teacher who epitomises determination — a trait she uses to inspire students along the same path she once walked.
“I’ve been working with TAFE Queensland for more than five years, initially teaching a combination of Certificate III in Beauty Services (SHB30121) and Certificate III in Nail Technology (SHB30321) — later focusing more on nails due to increased demand,” Delia began.
“I teach at the Ipswich campus, delivering training both online via Zoom on Mondays and face-to-face on campus for three days a week.”
Delia's teaching style at TAFE Queensland is based on her extensive industry experience, her personal career journey, and perseverance to learn another language.
“Many of my students come to my classroom eager to join the workforce. Often they have limited formal education as they may have come from overseas and English is their second language, or due to a change in personal circumstances and they need to return to work,” Delia observed.
“I share my story to relate to them — as English is my second language too, and I did not have a high school education in my home country, Philippines. But I became a successful business owner, and now I am here teaching at TAFE Queensland.”
Delia ensures she’s across the fast pace of the nail technology industry by working closely with local salons, employers and suppliers, inviting all to attend and demonstrate their products and techniques at on-campus Industry days, which she organises twice yearly.
“I also attend external trade shows, and use social media platforms like YouTube to watch tutorials and learn new techniques from other beauty professionals,” said Delia.
Delia’s ongoing dedication to her craft ensures students graduate with up-to-the-minute nail technician skills.
“Five of my recent graduate students, who I'm in touch with, have opened their own successful nail salons,” Delia offered, proudly.
“And for those wanting to be employees, rather than employers – the industry days also serve to facilitate student connections with industry, suppliers, and local potential employers.”
“They allow students to participate in demonstrations, learn new and upcoming trends, have some ‘informal’ interview practice, and provide strong networking opportunities for their future employment,” Delia said.
The Certificate III in Nail Technology (SHB30321) at TAFE Queensland covers units such as manicures, acrylics, gel and powder enhancements, nail art, advance nail art safe hygiene practices, infection control standards, and beauty and products advice.
This course allows students to be employed as or work as a self-employed nail technician on successful completion.e content goes here.
