From IT all-rounder to cyber security specialist: transforming with TAFE Queensland
When Vamshi began exploring the next step in his career, he knew the cyber security landscape was shifting faster than ever before.
With global attacks increasing in complexity and scale - and major Australian breaches underscoring how vulnerable organisations can be - he recognised the urgent need for highly skilled cyber professionals.
At the same time, Australia’s cyber workforce was projected to double by 2030, with more than 80,000 specialists needed nationwide.
For Vamshi, who had already established a strong foundation in information technology, it felt like the right moment to further develop his capabilities.
Before beginning his studies, Vamshi had worked across several IT domains, including risk management, information security, software testing, and auditing.
“I wanted to enhance my skills, stay updated with the latest industry trends, and expand my career opportunities,” he said.
When his organisation expressed interest in staff studying TAFE Queensland’s Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security (HED011), which also provides a direct pathway into the Master of Cyber Security (HED009), he signed up immediately.
Once enrolled, Vamshi found himself immersed in a course designed to build the foundational skills needed for modern cyber professionals.
Students in the Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security complete three core units that build a strong foundation in the field, including Cyber Security Risk and Incident Management, Cyber Security Law and Ethics, and an Applied Project that enables them to apply their learning in practice.
They then choose one elective - either Information and Network Security or Cyber Security Policy and Governance - to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals.
Together, these subjects provide students with a strong foundation in incident response, legal and ethical considerations, governance, defence strategies, and real-world applications.
“The course equipped me with strong knowledge and a deeper understanding, which I can now effectively apply in the workplace,” he said.
TAFE Queensland’s learning environment quickly became one of the highlights of Vamshi’s experience.
“The teachers are highly knowledgeable, and shared valuable information, provided real examples, and guided us throughout the learning process.”
The course’s blended approach, including pre-reading materials, videos, quizzes, breakout rooms, and in-class collaboration, helped keep students actively engaged.
“TAFE’s training is so well-structured and engaging that I enjoyed gaining new knowledge and having meaningful interactions in the classroom.”
Balancing work, study, and personal commitments required discipline, but Vamshi found his rhythm.
“I allocated dedicated time to focus on the course material and assessment tasks. It was challenging at first, but everything eventually fell into place.”
Throughout the process, the teacher's support played a key role.
“They were approachable and friendly, always addressing queries and offering additional consultation when needed. That support made a big difference.”
As he progressed through the course, Vamshi noticed his confidence growing. Understanding both the technical and governance aspects of cyber security allowed him to participate more fully in workplace discussions and contribute insights backed by theory and industry best practices.
“My studies broadened my scope and deepened my understanding, which significantly boosted my confidence as a cyber security professional,” he says.
Looking ahead, Vamshi is clear about his aspirations. His dream role sits in Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) - a field where he can ensure organisations stay resilient, informed, and protected.
“I want to make a meaningful contribution to the success of the organisation. In the next five to ten years, I see myself in a senior role, leveraging my expertise to support strategic decision-making and help shape organisational security.”
When asked whether he would recommend TAFE Queensland to others, Vamshi doesn’t hesitate.
“Definitely. TAFE provides a strong foundation for understanding the basics and building a successful career in cybersecurity. The lecturers are knowledgeable, supportive, and accommodating, which enhances the entire learning experience.”
For Vamshi, studying cyber security at TAFE Queensland has been more than just a qualification - it has been a career-shaping journey, one that has strengthened his capabilities, expanded his opportunities, and prepared him for a rapidly evolving future in the digital world.
