Gabrielle thrives through flexible learning

At just 15, TAFE Queensland student Gabrielle is already kicking goals with her education, thanks to the Unilearn Ready program.

Gabrielle, a passionate horse rider, rock climber, and chicken owner from Central Queensland, has been homeschooled since starting school.

"Studying and working from home gives me more flexibility and allows me to focus on other important life skills like sewing and cooking," Gabrielle explained.

Now, she’s combining her love of learning with the flexibility and support offered through the Unilearn Ready program - and she’s loving every minute of it.

Studying the UNL30 Building Numeracy Knowledge and Skills Unit, an online, self-directed course, Gabrielle is strengthening her numeracy skills and preparing for further education.

With topics ranging from percentages and interest calculations to statistics, geometry, and even an introduction to algebra, the course gives Gabrielle the perfect challenge at her current academic level.

“I chose to study the UNL30 course because it’s at the Year 10 level, which suits me, and it’s amazing – the more my maths skills improve, the more I enjoy it,” she said.

One of the things Gabrielle values most about studying through the Unilearn Ready program is the flexibility it provides.

Because the course is delivered online and self-paced, Gabrielle can balance her studies with other important parts of her life - from sewing and cooking to family holidays and horse-riding.

“There are so many benefits to homeschooling. I get a day off if I finish my schoolwork in four days. Or if I’m going on holiday, I can still study remotely – Unilearn Ready program makes my learning extremely flexible.”

Another highlight for Gabrielle has been the supportive Unilearn teacher, Lachlan Pollard. He has been responsive, encouraging, and always ready to help via email, phone, or a Zoom call whenever she has questions or needs clarification.

“My teacher provides invaluable support and is very responsive to emails, which is awesome. I loved how he explained the topics before the workbook questions - and if I needed help, I knew I could reach out,” said Gabrielle.

Completing the UNL30 course has not only boosted Gabrielle’s confidence in maths, but it’s also paved the way for her future aspirations.

After finishing the course, Gabrielle plans to study Animal Care and Agriculture courses with TAFE Queensland, which are areas she’s passionate about pursuing.

Her journey is an excellent example of how TAFE Queensland’s Unilearn Ready program can open doors for students of all backgrounds and learning styles, regardless of location.

“Unilearn is a wonderful and fun course. It’s a flexible pathway to future study that offers the support, structure, and inspiration I need to succeed. It’s the most interesting and enjoyable maths I have ever learnt, and I’m enjoying it so much,” concluded Gabrielle.
